From the Roundtable: A collaborative approach to chemical reduction
One of the SWR's key action areas is the Sustainable Viticulture Protocol (SVP), a principles-based framework to help with decision-making around chemical use, acknowledging that growing conditions vary considerably across regions. The SVP will be the centre of an on-going change management process away from intensive chemical use in the wine industry, towards a more sustainable, carbon-positive viticultural approach. As part of this work, the SWR undertook a small research programme earlier this year to better understand producers' priorities around chemical inputs and vineyard management. The aim was to explore whether an approach of collaboration and sharing of insights would be applicable to the sustainability of viticulture. My colleague Dr Peter Stanbury, SWR's head of research, joins me on the latest From the Roundtable podcast episode to share the findings and what they mean for the SVP.

The Wine Makers – Chris Renfro
This week Bart, Sam, and Danielle sit down for a long-awaited conversation with Chris Renfro, the visionary behind The Two Eighty Project and much more. The project began in 2020, when a neglected vineyard along San Francisco’s 280 freeway more or less fell into his lap. Amid the trials and turmoil of that year, Chris took it upon himself to revive roughly 65 vines that had been left for dead. As the vineyard grew, so did The Two Eighty Project’s mission: creating meaningful access to viticulture and wine for communities of color and other groups historically excluded from the industry. The soil of Alemany Farm — and Chris’s little vineyard-that-could — became a seedbed for social and racial equity in wine. Today, in addition to running the 280 Project and its vibrant apprenticeship program, Chris is making wine from grape varieties native to North America, hunting for forgotten vines and vineyards around San Francisco and beyond, and running one of the city’s hottest new wine shops, F

Decanting Wine 101: Why, When, and How to Decant Wine
Wine decanting is practiced by many wine connoisseurs to improve the characteristics and flavors of wine. However, is wine decanting all it’s cracked up to be? Is it a necessary or superfluous step? If necessary, why, when, and how should you decant wine? This is wine decanting 101– in other words, everything you need to know about decanting wine. The Practice of Decanting Wine Decanting wine is the act of slowly pouring wine from it’s original bottle into a different container– often into a designated, glass decanter with an easy-pour neck. The goal is to separate the wine from it’s sediment at the bottom of the bottle and to allow the wine to “open up.” Why to Decant Wine There is good reason many wine connoisseurs practice wine decanting with every bottle. The act of decanting provides many benefits for the wine drinker, including: Pouring wine from the bottle into a new container allows the wine to open up – or, in other words, aerate. Aeration occurs when oxygen makes contact with
