podcast· 43:09· Ep 81081: Transitioning from Grape Grower to Winemaker with Jim Duane – Part 2
In this episode of Vineyard Underground, Fritz continues his conversation with winemaker and Inside Winemaking podcast host Jim Duane on what it takes for grape growers to successfully step into winemaking. Following part one, which covered equipment, compliance, and basic chemistry, part two dives deeper into the realities of balancing vineyard management with winery responsibilities. Fritz and Jim explore how harvest decisions shift when you're making wine from your own fruit, weighing risks like weather and pests against the pursuit of higher quality. Jim shares how winemakers must rethink priorities, and they also break down which lab analyses should be done in-house versus outsourced. The discussion covers the intense workload during harvest, how to plan labor needs, and the value of building a team to avoid burnout. Jim stresses the importance of advance planning to manage the overlapping demands of the vineyard and the winery. He also highlights common mistakes growers face when

videoFrom Seed To Grape: A Winery's Four-Year Grape Growing Journey
Breaking with the established rules to find one's own identity meant a 4-year search through different valleys and areas of Chile, until finally, and after a long journey, La Ronciere found what they were looking for… The coast of the Curicó Valley, in the Licantén commune, revealed as a dream place for viticulture. Close to the banks of the Mataquito River and about 25 kilometers from the sea, between pronounced hills of the ancient coastal mountain range, a mosaic of different types of metamorphic soils unfolds, such as Licorellas, Shales, Maicillo and some clay loam sectors. The conjunction of such varied elements make this place a true "Microclimate", which meant that it was recognized as a new geographical denomination for winegrowing in Chile, being until now the only vineyard established in this place. Kyoto is best known for its wildly beautiful architecture, like the Fushimi Inari Shrine and Fushimi Castle, also known as Momoyama Castle. Travelers who dig a bit deeper into the city’s Fushimi district, however, discover another key aspect of its cultural identity: sake. As legend has it, Fushimi sake is especially good because of its water. Expert sake production began with Gekkeikan, a brewery helmed by the Okura family since 1637. CASE 0503: Friday, Friday, Gotta Get Down on Friday
DEFENDANT: Inconclusive EVIDENCE: Manos Special Edition Friday 13th Cab Sauv SCENE OF THE CRIME: Camp Crystal Lake, duh -- Join Judge Topher and Judge Rachel for a hilariously intimate, wine-soaked chat about the entire Friday the 13th saga. They riff on everything from the original film’s odd pacing and surprise twist to Jason’s evolution (hockey mask, cyborg era, and questionable resurrection logistics). Between sips of Manos Cab and offbeat personal stories (yes, poop tales and mall Freddy sightings included), they debate which sequels make sense, how horror tropes like “sex gets you killed” came to be, and whether Freddy or Jason would actually win. Casual, funny, and warm — it’s like eavesdropping on two friends dissecting slashers, spooky season plans, and the absurdities of genre continuity. Tune in for laughs, nostalgia, and the kind of off-script banter you wish your pals would record.
