June 30: Bartender and Mixologist Day
It's Bartender and Mixologist Day. Now, I think honoring the men and women who make our drinks is an excellent idea, but I've always had ambivalent feelings about the term "mixologist." Bartenders who work in dives hiss at the term, while those who apply it to themselves seem to be, well, a bit fancy. And while the whole mixology thing may seem like just another fresh-faced fad being foisted on the drinking public, the foisting has actually been going on for at least 160 years. Fermentazioni, lieviti e vino.
The wines of Languedoc 2026
Even without the Roussillon bit tacked on to the end, the French region of Languedoc is an enormous producer of wine. Within Europe, it comes in at second place, with Castilla-La Mancha at number one, although this is a bit of a tricky comparison given that Spain’s juggernaut is three times the size in terms of land. As you can drive from one end of Languedoc to the other in about an hour and a half, it’s not necessarily tremendous when looking at the physical landscape.
