Be cute, rebrew it
A promise of botanicals is where I left my last visit to Open Gate Brewery, and that materialised in late February as a beer called Ancient Gruit . Details of what they've used instead of hops would be nice, but as usual, there's no mechanism for finding that out once they've decided not to put it on the menu card. It's 5.2% ABV and a cloudy yellow-gold, the paleness suggesting the malting techniques are very modern indeed. It doesn't taste like other gruits I've had. They tend to be spicy and herbal, usually with a strong sweet side due to the lack of hops. This is bitter, centred on a raw vegetal effect, like the thick white stem of a red cabbage leaf. A rasping acidity and weedy, dandelion tang give it a medicinal quality: it feels like something you drink for solely health reasons. I quite liked the oddness, but it won't be for everyone. Some darker malt and some brighter flavours might make it more accessible. There was also another flavoured stout, following on from the pistachio

Domaine de Beaurenard – Tradition Rouge 2021
The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik came out it the later part of 1991 when I was just barely a teenager. I listened to it endlessly, the reason being that it was and continues to be a superb album. It’s amazing to look at the songs that didn’t make the original cut like “Soul to Squeeze” as they just didn’t fit in with the album as a whole, even if still good music. Rick Rubin did a fine job of massaging all the random genres that the […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription.

Kilchoman Maury Cask Matured (2026)
Maury is one of the AOCs for fortified wines (Vin Doux Naturel) in the Rousillon area, near Perpignan in France. It is a fairly small zone (just four communes), even if you add the bigger neighbours Rivesaltes and Banyuls it is a limited production. Most Maury is sweet but it can also be dry, and it can be made of white or red grapes, mostly grenache, macabeu and muscat. The wines are aged in barriques, large foudres or - more typically - in glass demi-johns exposed to direct sunlight. This gives the wine a flavour profile with the sweetness of Port but also the oxidative rancio character of Madeira for instance. Some of the best known producers like Mas Amiel, which I visited a couple of years ago, have vineyards in several AOCs so they can offer several denominations.I don't think I've ever had a whisky matured in Maury casks, so here's a first. Kilchoman Maury Cask Matured was a full term maturation, not merely a finish. A set of 19 Maury butts from 2021 were vatted for this release,

Alta Vista Is A Relatively New Winery In Life And Legacy
