Beer, BBQ & burros: A look at Village Creek Brewing Co. in Rendon
Photos © Brian Brown/Beer in Big D. If you're looking for a place to go where you can get away from it all, a new venue in Rendon may be just the sort of spot you seek. What's more, with the primary offerings being craft beer and barbecue, one wonders what more does a Texan need? Founded by Art & Sunny Anderson, you could certainly call Village Creek Brewing Co. a labor of love, considering the couple has been working to make the business a reality since 2019. That year, they poured beer at Luckapalooza V , hosted by LUCK at Trinity Groves, while they were scouting locations for their future endeavor. By the end of 2019, the Andersons had purchased a 4.7-acre site in Rendon, with the brewery and an expansive biergarten set to front the property while occupying around an acre of that land at 6690 Levy County Rd. So, why did it take six years to get here? Well, to start, there was this pandemic thing that caused a few disruptions. Beyond that, by all accounts Village Creek was built

The Ordinance Book of the Worshipful Company of Distillers, which detailed the organization, rules, and practices of its guild members, dates back to 1638. Severe spring frost causes up to 50% crop loss at Stanlake Park Wine Estate
Stanlake Park Wine Estate has reported significant crop losses following an unexpected ground frost event, underlining both the unpredictability of English viticulture and the resilience required to produce wine in the UK. Despite forecasts predicting overnight temperatures of 2°C to 3°C, the vineyard was impacted by a ground frost, where surface temperatures fall below freezing […] The post Severe spring frost causes up to 50% crop loss at Stanlake Park Wine Estate appeared first on Vineyard Magazine .

May 24: Queen Victoria’s Birthday
It's Queen Victoria's birthday. Born in 1819, she served as the regent of Great Britain and Ireland for 63 years. That's a long time to be the CEO of an Empire. So, you're probably wondering, did the Queen like a tipple or two? She did, though she didn't have the same tastes as the commoners. She didn't have the same tastes as anyone. Her favorite drink, and I have to give her props for this, was half red wine and half single malt scotch. We'll just call it the Queen Victoria Cocktail because I don't think anyone else will touch it. She also liked scotch and sodas, various wines and even the occasional beer. Top quote: "Give my people plenty of beer, good beer and cheap beer, and you will have no revolution among them." She put this theory into practice, allotting each of her household servants eight pints of beer a day. True story: Every year the Lochnagar Distillery delivered a unique barrel of Scotch whisky specifically tailored to Victoria's tastes. It's good to be Queen.

The last freakin’ article on the Judgment of Paris (again)
So, it's the 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris today. For those who don't know of it, but still drink wine, this probably means that you're a GenXer or younger as even the oldest of us couldn't legally drink when this tasting event came to pass that supposedly put California on the map and gave the French a spanking. Please do read the Wikipedia article above and it lays out all the 'shocking' details of it. When I mentioned the 40th anniversary back in 2016, I feel there was a lot more 'huzzah' about it. The main reason being that a lot of those who participated were still alive and everyone wanted to undoubtedly celebrate it while the livin' was still good. Indeed, most everyone who was key to the event has now left us for the open bar in the sky. The biggie in that group was Steven…

Guernsey, Channel Islands
As I mentioned last week, I had a week away from home. As a widow, I have not been brave enough yet to do singles holidays (although I am slowly coming round to the idea). I do once a year grab a few days away with my best friend from university days, but she does not like the idea of flying, so holidays abroad are ruled out. It was therefore with some surprise when she suggested this year's trip might be to Guernsey in the Channel Islands via the ferry from Poole. It is off the cost of France and has its own currency and health system, so I could at least pretend it was "abroad". I met my friend in Poole on Friday 8th May and we stayed one night at the Travelodge there. She had driven from Hertfordshire and I had got the train to Poole from London. Unfortunately my room had been sprayed with some very strong air freshener which gave me a headache within 5 minutes of being in the room. I had to get out of there and go for a walk in Poole to clear my head. I think the maid m

"Dream Martinborough vintage" wins top scores in London
Every vineyard has a story behind it and that story gained a lot more significance this week for Nga Waka Lease Block Pinot Noir 2024 from Martinborough, which won four trophies, a gold medal and 96/100 points at the 2026 International Wine and Spirits Challenge. The Challenge has forged a name for putting wines through their paces rigorously every year since it was founded in 1969, so it's no mean feat to gain high scores, let alone so many trophies.
