Atlanta discovers that behind every good wine bar is a good . . . chef
“I think it’s very strange that the expectation is, if you are at a wine bar, you are going to get some flatbread—some, like, uninspired food,” says Madeira Park partner Tim Willard, a well-traveled sommelier who opened the Poncey-Highland spot with Miller Union’s Steven Satterfield and Neal McCarthy. “But you are there for wine, and the snacks are just to kind of keep you full or get your palate salted so the wine tastes better. We had no interest in that.” The post Atlanta discovers that behind every good wine bar is a good . . . chef appeared first on Atlanta Magazine .

Travel Guide to the Bordeaux Wine Region
Why a region on the verge of rennaissance should be at the top of your list to visit next. I first explored Bordeaux a decade ago as an English language teaching assistant. What is Soca Music?
If you don’t know what Soca is or haven’t experienced the vibe and energy at a Linganore festival before, here’s a little explanation from the soca King, Machel Montano. Please The Palate July 2025 Newsletter
Summer is here and with it comes the 14th anniversary of Please The Palate. I am proud to be celebrating another year of business, especially amidst the challenges the wine industry is facing. And we are all feeling it. In the more than two decades that I have worked in the wine industry, I have seen challenges and changes, but nothing has been like this. It seems like the wine industry is being hit on every side, all at once. Costs are up, consumption is down. There is the threat of tariffs and an anti-alcohol sentiment. I have felt these challenges over the past two years but continue to try to push through with an optimistic attitude.

If you flip to the back of my 2017 book Around the World in Eighty Wines, you’ll find a list of the wines from my global adventures. I didn’t want to just list them alphabetically or sort by price or critic rating. Organizing them by country of origin didn’t seem right, either. So I invented […]

Rioja Growers & Vignerons
A new generation of Rioja winemakers is bringing vineyard, varietal and terroir focus to the region. What these innovators in Rioja have in common is a focus on single vineyards, some planted with old vines. Young winemakers are searching for an expression of terroir–the essence of the vineyard, soil and climate. Vignerons, grower-producers, artisan winemakers or terroiristas are commonly used terms for these new producers.

Prestige Alcohol Brands Are Difficult to Build — and All Too Easy to Ruin
It was the evening after my wedding in New Orleans — ages ago — and the core crew of our leftover revelers had descended upon a relaxing Marigny haunt to unwind in style before the impending crash back to our respective realities. “Johnnie Black on the rocks,” I said to the barkeep. “Scratch that,” my brother quickly interrupted. “He’ll take the Macallan 25, neat.” The barman stretched for the gloriously toffee-hued bottle lording over the back bar as my brother turned his sly signature grin my direction. “Relax!
