🎧WTF is Valdiguié? Don’t Call It Napa Gamay!
Oh wow! This wine, that you’ve probably never heard of, is a revelation! For many years this wine was known as Napa Gamay, but it was a case of mistaken identity that took several experts and eventually DNA testing to reveal the truth. And the truth is that Valdiguié is delicious and tragically little known. Nearly extinct today in France where it is originally from, it is now becoming a bit of a darling in California in the natural wine and low intervention winemaking circles. In the past, Valdiguié, which is a prolific grower, was used as blending wine, and was not appreciated as a single varietal. Today, it is finding its place among adventurous winemakers who know how to tease out its wonderful qualities. If you like Gamay or Pinot Noir and you like chilled red wines, Valdiguié needs to be on your list. One of these wines we rated a 9 out of 10! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2023 Cruse Wine Co. Rancho Chimiles Vineyard Valdiguié, 2022 Optik French Camp Valdiguié Send us a Text Me

🎧The Wine Makers – Keith Beavers: The Great American Wine Tour (and a Raid on Phil’s Cellar)
Keith Beavers is a busy man. He’s a podcaster, wine educator, and tasting director for VinePair, one of the most widely read drinks publications in the world. He also hosts VinePair’s Wine 101 podcast, making the unnecessarily intimidating world of wine a little more approachable. Since Keith was last on the show, he’s been crisscrossing the country, exploring the ever-evolving American wine scene and releasing the first six episodes of The Great American Wine Tour, visiting a half-dozen iconic and emerging wineries along the way. This week, Keith sits down with Bart and Sam to talk about all of that, but let’s be clear, this visit was really about one thing: raiding Phil Coturri’s cellar. And Sam’s cellar, too. Because somehow, despite Keith’s vast experience tasting wines from around the world, he’d never really had the opportunity to dig into properly aged California wine. We decided it was time to fix that. We pull the corks on a few old bottles from Sonoma Valley and the Moon Moun

🎧Ep 624: The Greats – Shiraz of the Barossa Valley, Australia
Located about 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Adelaide, at 34.7˚south, the Barossa Valley is mainly a red wine region (I don't consider Eden Valley in this show – it has one great wine but the region is not a "Great" in my estimation) and Shiraz is half of the vineyard. As the first wine to put Australia on the international wine map, the Barossa is unapologetically bold and big in style – it makes still makes bold, rich Shiraz from a warm climate and soils suited for this style. Photo: Barossa Valley Credit: Cirillo Wines In this show, I go over the history, which starts in 1842, discuss the terroir of the region, the winegrowing and winemaking conditions, food pairings, producers, and I discuss the ups and downs of this famed region, which still has productive vines from the days of the colonists. Barossa is a fascinating place, that is ever-evolving. It embodies the Australian winemaking ethos of relentless adjustment, merging tech and tradition, and making wine that is uniquely Austr

🎧Ep 278 – Oceanic Wine: Can You Taste the Sea? with Chris Howard
In this episode of Eat Sleep Wine Repeat, Janina dives into the fascinating and potentially controversial idea of Oceanic Wine with wine writer, judge and educator Chris Howard. Chris has proposed that oceanic wine should be considered a category in its own right, exploring what happens when the sea becomes one of the dominant forces shaping a vineyard and the wine in your glass. But what actually makes a wine oceanic rather than simply coastal? Chris explains why proximity alone isn't enough, and how wind, fog, salt, temperature, exposure and geography can all influence vineyards in very different ways. From California's Sonoma Coast and coastal Chile to Tasmania, Margaret River, South Africa and New Zealand, this episode explores Wine Regions where the ocean may play a defining role. The conversation also asks one of the most intriguing questions in Wine Education: when tasters describe salinity, iodine, oyster shell or sea spray, are we genuinely tasting the ocean? Chris introduces
