Rounding Up Contributions To The Session #145 — Critique Not Criticism
A little later than planned (due to a malaise brought upon by a rather jovial stag weekend in Dublin celebrating the imminent nuptials of my pal Gareth) I’ve finally got around to collating entries to this month's session. Positing that there’s not enough proper critique in beer writing compared, say, to restaurant or wine writing, I asked writers to deliver a critique of their own, and received nine different responses. I also published my own critique, with interesting results, and I’ll share a bit more insight on that after the roundup. If you contributed to Session #145 and don’t see your post in this list please share the link with me and I’ll update this post accordingly. *** To start, over at A Good Beer Blog Alan McLeod —who has been liberally applying critique to beer writing for as long as I’ve been reading it— considers the act of critique within beer writing at large . He references the late Michael Jackson, who famously said if he didn’t like a beer he simply wouldn’t writ

Chris Puppione, Puppione Family Wines
Chris Puppione from Puppione Family Wines is back on California Wine Country with Dan Berger and Daedalus Howell. The last time Chris was on the show was this episode last summer, on June 6 , when he spoke to Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Chris has brought four wines that Dan describes as “fabulous” and they are low-alcohol wines. Dan says Chris has had an opportunity to explore the lower-alcohol market. Chris says that people are just looking for flavor and “what’s old is new” and Dan notes that higher alcohol takes flavor away from the variety. Low alcohol is not less wine but just less noise. It takes away from nuances that they prefer to bring forward in their wines. There is a white and three reds. First, Dan’s cellar wine is the 2024 Bahl Fratty Riesling, which he will pour at the VIP event at the Anderson Valley White Wine Festival . “It’s coming out of its shell,” but in three or four years it will be really ready. They will also pour Vermentino and other whites. Dan’s table is a

Looking for a Place to Happen - Seeking Sober Spaces
I've been on a lot of beer runs in the last 35 years, maybe just to the Beer Store in the beginning, but after 2015 we stepped it up in a big way, culminating in cross province, week long jaunts that left my fridge bulging and my glass overflowing with the new and interesting things Ontario had to offer. We've done multi day road trips, driving hundreds of kilometers in search of pints to explore and met countless people like ourselves along the way. Sometimes it was just popping into one of the nearby breweries for a bite and a beer, the simple pleasure of belonging to a community that supports the hopes and dreams of local small businesses and hoping to do our small part to help spread the good word. I love a solid beer run and this last weekend was perhaps the worst, most depressing one I've ever taken and it illustrates a real problem the sober or non-alcoholic beer world has when it comes to helping folks crossover or drink a little less if that's what they're after.

videoPerfect Temperature for Red Wine
Most people think “room temperature” is perfect for red wine — but that idea comes from old European castles, not your modern heated living room. 😉 The right serving temperature is what brings balance: the fruit, the freshness, and the texture that make a wine shine. Too warm, and alcohol dominates. Too cold, and the aromas hide. Getting it right is the easiest way to make even an everyday red taste like a special bottle. 🍷 👉 Want to learn all the rules of wine and how to serve it like a pro? Watch the full video now.

Coral of Maison De Plaisances and I have been hard at work on this special episode about the Chinese in early California viticulture. We’re going to be focussed in the Sonoma Valley and focussed around Viniculture but Napa, Fresno, LA and orchard and row crops will also make an appearance. You should really check out her wines if you haven’t Maisondp.com or taste them at Dos Bar. Emma Lipp of Valley Bar and Bottle joins us also. videoCan Wine Save The Planet, Climate Drought
Our planet is in the midst of climate chaos. We are seeing the desertification of land, chaotic rain events and flooding, heat events, and severe drought. Climate Change: Rising global temperatures increase evaporation and atmospheric evaporation demand, intensifying droughts and making them more frequent and severe in many regions, especially already dry areas. There are Solutions! Cover crops, crop rotation, rotational grazing, and irrigation improvements can all help stabilize soil. Contour farming, dune stabilization, and Windbreaks can also help! The goal is to encourage life. Plants and their roots hold the soil in place. They also aerate the soil, allowing the water to soak in. This encourages microbial life, and the positive cycle continues. Cover crops help hold water, allowing for less runoff and erosion. Riparian areas along rivers can also help hold the banks in place. Contour farming helps slow the flow of running water, giving it time to seep into the soil. Many sma

The Wine Makers – DTC Symposium Part 1
Steve Gross, Honore Comfort & Mark Barden Wine Institute Monterey, Calif. — Sitting down with Steve Gross has become one of our favorite DTC Wine Symposium traditions. Not only does he have one of the best radio voices in the wine business, but he’s spent nearly four decades on the front lines of wine shipping battles nationwide. Largely thanks to his efforts, residents of 49 states can now receive direct-to-consumer wine shipments. Steve is always ready to update us on the latest state-level shenanigans aimed at limiting consumer access to their favorite wines. But his role has recently grown even bigger. Last month, he stepped into the role of interim president of the Wine Institute. Frankly, we couldn’t feel more confident having Steve Gross leading this crucial organization at such a pivotal moment. One of the big-picture initiatives coming out of the Wine Institute is the Share Wine Co-Lab. To dig into how and why it came together, we were joined by a familiar face for Sonoma Coun

videoDiscovering Wine Country Valtalina Italy Interview Shorts #italy #wineenthusiast #winemakers
Discovering Vini di Valtellina – Chiavennasca – the Nebbiolo of the Alps Far in the north of Italy’s Lombardia region, tucked between the Rhaetian Alps of Switzerland and the Orobiche Alps in Italy, you find the east-west valley of Valtellina. Here, the Adda River flows from the Swiss Alps through the Valtellina Valley and then out to the west into Lake Como, past Milan, and eventually to the Po River. The Alps protect this region from storms. The rain shadow that is caused means they receive less than 900 millimeters of rain annually. The valley’s north side, which gets the southern exposure, has terraces of vines planted to catch the light. Vineyards here are steep. “Muretti” the dry stone walls that terrace the vines The roots of the vines here drive into the mother rock giving the Nebbiolo here lighter tannins and higher minerality. The Adda River has always been known to flood. Its water originates from snowpack in the Alps, so grapes were planted on the steep slopes bet
podcast· 3:12QUAL A FUNÇÃO DAS ROSEIRAS NOS VINHEDOS?

Women's History Month: Featuring Cristina Scarpellini of Tenuta Scerscé in Valtellina
When one thinks of the Nebbiolo grape and wines produced from Nebbiolo what region of Italy immediately comes to mind? My guess is that most consumers would immediately think of the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. What if I told you that the Lombardy region right next door also produces Nebbiolo? In continuation of honoring Women’s History Month , I interviewed with Cristina Scarpellini of Tenuta Scerscé whose winery is situated in the Valtellina wine region of northern Lombardy . Cristina works exclusively with Nebbiolo, which is locally known there as Chiavennasca . Cristina Scarpellini Cristina ’s winery, Tenuta Scerscé (pronounced “shaer-shay), is set in Lombardy’s northernmost part, Valtellina, bordering Switzerland . This landscape is a valley that was carved out by glaciers during the last Ice Age with the Adda River that runs east out to Lake Como . Back in 2018 this area was deemed a UNESCO World
