It's Paul Bunyan Day. As children, we all delighted in the outrageous yarns about the monstrous lumberjack and his blue ox, Babe, but did you know the source of the legend was drunken 19th-century lumberjacks working near the Great Lakes? Paul got his start around the wood stoves of logging camps, after the loggers finished their day of chopping wood and got down to swilling booze and seeing who could tell the biggest yarn. A forerunner of the Chuck Norris meme, Paul's original achievements were much saltier than what you grew up with, with many of the tales involving drinking extraordinary amounts of booze and, well, doing other things men do. They were sanitized and toned down for a 1930's advertising campaign by the Red River Lumber Company that served to spread the legend from the Great Lakes area to the rest of America.

Heatwave and We are Family (part 2)
We have been experiencing a heatwave on extreme proportions. As I write this, I have the fan on in the study and it is just pushing hot air round the room. My lounge thermometer tells me it is 32C, despite closed windows, closed curtains and an electric fan. On Monday night we had a very impressive storm at about 4am in the night. I was woken by flashing lights in the bedroom which would flash every 20 seconds. On getting up, I discovered it was lightning streaking across the sky at 20-second intervals. After a good half hour, the lightning was eventually joined by claps of thunder. I was pleased to learn on the local Facebook page that I was not the only one who had never seen a storm quite like it before. This went on for over an hour until 5am. It was accompanied by torrential monsoon-like rain that caused a lot of flooding in certain parts of London. Weeks and weeks ago, Kay and I had agreed to spend Sunday and Monday together to tackle the wilderness of her garden. She had some da

Here we go! Let’s get down to the competitions. I hope that you guys are as excited about this as I am. These were tasted in an order only known to my wife as another bit of obfuscation to hide what was being tasted. So Round 1 of the 2026 BourbonGuy.com Brackets starts with Division 2’s Number 4 seed, Four Roses Small Batch taking on Number 1 seed, Benchmark Single Barrel Bourbon . Four Roses Small Batch , produced by the Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, KY, used to be this Four Roses Fanboy’s favorite pour from them. I really enjoyed the mellow, nuanced flavor. Of course, as I grew accustomed to higher proof bourbons, it soon felt a little…weak. I still enjoy a pour of it now and then, because it is delicious, but I don’t buy it nearly as often as I used to and that makes me just a little sad. This bottle was purchased at Total Wine in Burnsville, MN for $26.99 for a 750 mL bottle or $1.80 per pour. Their opponent is a bourbon that I don’t think I’ve ever had before, though it’
