The Westminster Arms
I have something of a soft spot for Kent's Shepherd Neame . It was their Bishop's Finger that got me into better beer than the keg swill I would drink as a younger man after all, as well as a friend in Prague having been a barman in an SH pub. Whenever I get back to the UK, which is nowhere near as often as I would like, I will pick up a few bottles of Shepherd Neame beers, usually the aforementioned Bishop's Finger, but also their Double Stout and even the India Pale Ale. However, and for obvious reasons, Shepherd Neame pubs are few and far between in the Highlands of Scotland, and I don't think I have ever seen a Shepherd Neame beer on a beer engine at any of the pubs I frequent when I go home. Having a few days then in London was the opportunity to find the nearest Shepherd Neame pub to my hotel and dive into their range a bit more. Given that my hotel was just yards from Westminster Abbey, said nearest Shepherd Neame pub was The Westminster Arms . On arriving at my hotel, being giv

Dueling Seconds
I can remember an office my wife worked at long ago. Prominently placed was a sign that read, “If less than three people laugh, it’s not funny.” Some of the folks employed there were very kind, some were there simply to punch a clock, and one was unintentionally hilarious.* With the exception of the head […] The post Dueling Seconds first appeared on About Boulder County Colorado - Visitor and Local Guide to Boulder County Colorado .

🎧The Wine Makers – Justin Ennis, Freestone Winery, Joseph Phelps
Winemaker Justin Ennis crafts Freestone wines with a deep attention to detail, capturing the distinct character of each vineyard while balancing the vibrancy of the terroir with a refined, elegant structure. Now, that deep-rooted vision comes to market, as Justin and the winery introduce these vineyard-driven wines to a broader audience for the first time. “Everything begins in the vineyard. Through hands-on farming and careful attention, we work to bring in fruit that’s expressive and healthy. In the cellar, I practice minimal intervention winemaking so that the site, the varietal, the clone, and the vintage can speak for themselves,” said Ennis. “The wine is already in the vineyard; my job is simply not to get in its way.” In the 1990s, Joseph Phelps and his son Bill set out to find a place in California’s wine country where they could produce superlative Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The search led him to a place no one suspected – a tiny, unincorporated town called Freestone, tucked a

Chillable Red Wines Perfect for Summer
Yes, I love rosé for all my summer fun. I mean is there anything better at the beach or the lake? And I definitely drink more white and sparkling wine these days than red. But even with all of that, I still enjoy a fair amount of red wine. Yes - even in the ridiculously hot and humid Houston summer. So finding some chillable red wines is absolutely essential. Even at the lake, sometimes you just want a glass of red wine! Not every red wine shows well when it’s chilled. Chillable red wines tend to have a few things in common. They have lower alcohol, lower tannin level, high acidity, pronounced fruit flavor, and overall tend to be lighter-bodied. Save that tannic Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah for another time. A cold tannin can taste bitter and who wants that? Typically, red wine should be served between 55 and 65 degrees. It should be cool to the touch, which incidentally is a sore subject for me. It drives me batshit crazy when I go to restaurants and they bring me a bottle of red wine
