Watermelon Raspberry Cooler
This Watermelon Raspberry Cooler is a super refreshing beverage that will be a great thirst quencher for summer heat with watermelon, raspberries and lime. Served as a cocktail but easy to make as a mocktail too! I love watermelon…but I mean really good watermelon. When the grocery store is selling watermelons in the winter I... Forget the Beach House. This Summer, Drink Long Island at Portrait Bar
Long Island, But Make It a Cocktail — Portrait Bar’s New Summer Menu HAS ArriveD If you're headed to New York this summer, make time for a detour that doesn't require a MetroCard or a rental car. Hidden inside the five-star Fifth Avenue Hotel—luxury without the attitude, all polished brass and velvet hush—is The Portrait Bar . It’s got the kind of character you’d expect from a library where the books drink Negronis. And for a limited time, it’s offering a summer menu inspired by that most unglamorous but deeply nostalgic New York tradition: the Long Island Rail Road. Yes, that LIRR. Turns out, the clackety old line that shuttles beach-bound city dwellers to Montauk, Oyster Bay, and beyond is now the muse behind one of the most imaginative cocktail menus in Manhattan. Bar Director Darryl Chan—equal parts alchemist and local historian—has crafted five drinks that nod to the train lines and the destinations at the end of them. They’re playful, potent, and made with ingredients sourced fro

videoTasting Opening Price Brunello di Montalcino
Today's video is a tasting of two Brunello di Montalcinos priced at around $20 per bottle. Both are exclusive labels, one to Costco, the other to Trader Joe's. Brunello at this price is virtually unheard of, but here we are with two options. Both are from the highly acclaimed 2020 vintage. Each wine will be tasted twice as part of a single-blind tasting, meaning I know which wines are in the tasting, but not the order poured. First, I'll taste the wines soon after they are opened. Then I'll retaste both after a few hours of aeration. One of the wines is the 2020 Kirkland Signature Brunello di Montalcino, found at Costco. It's a seasonal wine that tends to sell out quickly. It'll be in the lay-down wooden wine bins. The price is up a bit from the last vintage. I picked it up for $21.79 The other wine is the 2020 Poggio Lontano Brunello di Montalcino, sold only at Trader Joe's; it's a limited-release wine, available seasonally. I've not tried this one from previous vintages. The pric

How to use sake in cocktails: styles, tips and recipe ideas
What happens when a drink rooted in tradition meets the creativity of modern mixology? London-based writer and anthropologist Joel Hart explores how sake is being reimagined in cocktails, and why its balance of umami, texture and aroma makes it such a compelling ingredient behind the bar. Once scarce in the UK - and when it did appear, often served hot enough to mask a low-grade profile - sake now occupies a very different space. The Japanese fermented rice beverage is more often associated with high-end settings: a life-changing pairing in an omakase, or the offbeat, quietly confident choice within a wine flight at one of the world's best restaurants. But what about cocktails - should mixing high-quality sake with other components be seen as sacrilegious, or might it occupy an important space in the UK's increasing sakemania? Once scarce in the UK – and when it did appear, often served piping hot to disguise poor quality – sake now occupies a very different space. The Japanese ferment

Arch Bridge Taphouse 11th Archiversary of the Oregon City craft beer renaissance
Arch Bridge Taphouse that helped revive Oregon City’s craft beer scene, is turning 11. Beer bars and bottle shops can be found pretty much everywhere around the Pacific Northwest, but it takes a certain level of comfort, curation, community, and culture to make a truly great one. You could call this the 4-C formula of a great beer bar and bottle shop. There are loads of places that possess one or more of these. However, only a select handful truly exemplify all of four Since opening in 2015, the little beer bar and bottle shop named after the signature bridge that crosses over the mighty Willamette River just feet from its door has brought all of the Cs together. Beer lover Gene Gilgorea established Arch Bridge Taphouse in Oregon City’s historic Bank of Commerce building with the intention of bringing some of their favorite beers to their small town in Portland’s backyard and hopefully making it past the one-year mark. “We were so new to this, I think we were just hoping to make

The Elevation of Appetite
At 2,010 meters above sea level, the first thing that changes is your breathing. The second is your appetite. By the time you are standing outside a mountain hut with a glass of Blauburgunder in hand, something else has shifted too. The wine tastes different up here. In December, I went to Alta Badia, a small, jagged pocket of Südtirol-Alto Adige, with skis, a notebook, and a question. Nestled among the villages of San Cassiano, La Villa, Corvara, and the Campolongo Pass, the region is defined by its verticality, snow, and fine cuisine. Every year, as the ski season starts,...
