Sallier de la Tour: A Historic Sicilian Estate Committed to Sustainability
The Wining Hour: History of the Estate Sallier de La Tour, home to the La Monaca winery, near Palermo, Sicily, traces its origins to 1909. The history is most fascinating. Its story intertwined with another influential Sicilian wine family in 1956, when Paolo Sallier de La Tour married Costanza Tasca d’Almerita. The winery historically cultivated Sicilia’s native grape varieties, as well as carefully selected international grapes. However, Filiberto, Paolo’s son, later steered the estate toward exploring the potential of Syrah in the island’s unique terroir. In 2008, the estate became part of the broader holdings of the historic Tasca d’Almerita family, which took stewardship of the property. Since then, the estate has balanced noble heritage with modern winemaking and sustainability, honoring both land and legacy. Terroir Tenuta Sallier de la Tour is within the Monreale DOC in northwest Sicily, a landscape where Mediterranean sun, sea breezes, and varied soil types give grapes a uniqu

videoYou Can See $14 Trillion From This Tiny Vineyard
We blew most of the budget in the first half of this trip — so the back half is tents, servo coffee and Taco Bell, while we taste some of the most ridiculous wine in California. At one point you can stand in a six-hectare vineyard, dry-farmed, and look straight at Apple Park and the densest pile of tech money on the planet. The wine sitting next to all that could've scaled into an empire. Whoever owns it chose not to. We needed to know why. It kept dragging us back to the same uncomfortable question: when did "good enough" become the bar for wine — and when the market turns, which producers actually survive? There's also a stop on this leg I'd been quietly building toward for years. I won't say more than that here. It hit harder than I expected. Plus: the vineyards of Mount Eden, six hectares overlooking Silicon Valley; a day at Rajat Parr's ranch; Henry's first crack at selling Aussie wine into LA; the most aggressively religious Airbnb in America; and a guard-dog situation that c

The Rich Range of Sauvignon Blanc Expressions in New Zealand Is Underrated
by Andrew ChalkOn the WSET (Wine & Spirits Education Trust) Level 3 blind tasting exam, it is quite likely the white wine to be tasted is a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The island country sits alone in the South Pacific Ocean and has developed its wine industry with a singular cast of mind. Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown and, in stereotypical parlance, produces wines of vibrant acidity, citable citrus fruits, and herbaceous aromatic notes. This Occum’s Razor will not just pin down the Kiwi wine

This Massive Chart Shows Which Companies Own America’s Top Spirits Brands
While the craft spirits sector is indisputably large, it’s undeniable that the U.S. spirits industry is dominated by a handful of conglomerates. And as independent brands grow larger and more popular with consumers, it’s not uncommon for large companies to swoop in with an acquisition. To keep track of which companies own what, Matt Rice — founder of beverage alcohol industry strategy and analytics firm Thirsty Insights — compiled a chart identifying the best-selling spirits brands on the American market (those selling over 500,000 9L cases per year) and their parent companies.
