In today's video, Bob Paulinski takes a deep dive into Albarino, with a primary focus on the wines of Rias Baixas, Spain. Albarino is one of the rising stars in the wine world. The video includes a tasting and discussion of four bottles to consider when you're out wine shopping. Rias Baixas is located in Galicia in NW Spain. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west and Portugal to the south. It's split into five sub-zones, each producing slightly different wine styles. Over 90% of the wine produced in the region is made from Albarino. It's a green gold grape variety with thick skin that helps it remain disease-free and allows for a wide range of winemaking techniques. The vines are routinely grown well above ground on elevated overhead trellises, promoting airflow to counter the region's high humidity. For today's video, I visited Trader Joe's to find the most interesting red wines that offer good value. I picked up three wines from three different countries, all of which have the right markers to be worthwhile bottles at a reasonable price. Let's get right into the winetasting. Nizza is a small, relatively new, Barbera-focused DOCG in Piedmont, NW Italy. Nizza has received heaps of positive press in recent years. Bersano is a reliable source that produces wine for TJ's. The 2020 Trader Joe's Platinum Nizza Riserva is made from 100% Barbera. The riserva is aged at least 12 months in barrel and 30 months in total before being released for sale. It's priced at $15.99 per bottle. The next wine is from Spain, the 2023 Satis Dei, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla, located a bit south of Madrid. For starters, the vast majority of wines are not made for long-term aging; they are best within a few years of the vintage. They highlight the primary fruit character that will only fade over time. Another smaller group of wines can maintain themselves over an extended period, but they will not gain complexity or nuance. The final group will gain positive attributes that were not present during the early stage of development. They don't just survive, they evolve.
