Wines of the Week: Ankida Ridge Pinot Noir Reserve 2017 and Barboursville Octagon 2015
Since I got a Coravin, a wonderful tool that extracts wine from a bottle through the cork and displaces the wine with inert argon gas, I’ve enjoyed sampling wines without having to either open or empty the bottle—I can “have my wine and drink it, too.” Recently during a cool spell, I decided to sample […]

The Alchemy of Embers: Smoke and Bourbon – the Perfect Winter Pairing
The ritual of the cocktail is an exercise in intentionality. While a great bourbon stands on its own, the introduction of smoke transforms a drink from a simple pour into a sensory experience. At the Social House, we view smoking not as a gimmick, but as a culinary tool used to unlock the deeper, hidden […]

James Gunn’s Superman Doesn’t Soar: A Misfire of Tone and Timing
I’ve had an up-and-down relationship with James Gunn’s superhero films. Only one of the three Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy films totally worked for me, and while I’ll cherish Guardians 2 forever, the others in the series were more indicative of the poles of Gunn’s overbearing style. On one hand, the first Guardians film undercut its serious moments and strained too much for laughs. Guardians 3 had the opposite issue: Gunn overindulged in schmaltz and manipulation (but learned that cute animals in danger could be a winning formula). Likewise, Gunn’s The Suicide Squad followed in the irreverent footsteps of its Guardians predecessors. Now, Gunn takes over the DC Comics film universe, and in turn, a franchise that’s been rather inflexible in its presentation. Unfortunately, Gunn’s deft touch with the wise-cracking heroes of Guardians and Suicide Squad doesn’t translate to Superman, a figure who embodies sincerity and earnestness. Su

A Tour of Wine Grapes: Montepulciano
Montepulciano 🍷 Photo by Ra Boe on Wikimedia Commons Montepulciano (mon-tay-pull-chee-anno") is an Italian grape, mostly found in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Although the Montepulciano grape shares its name with the Montepulciano region in Italy, the grape is from the Abruzzo region while the Montepulciano region is known for the Sangiovese grape. Are you still with me? The modern era for the grape truly began in 1968 with the official creation of the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC . Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a very dark skinned grape. In fact, its skin is so rich in color pigments, the juice is instantly an opaque purple upon crushing whereas most red wines get their color from long soaking periods with the juice in contact with the skins (i.e., maceration). Wines produced from the Montepulciano grape can have two styles. The medium-bodied wine is the standard. Everyday versions are aged in stainless steel. The full-bodied style is achieved through longer maceration periods and aging

the not serious Pen Naish & Nicholas Brown
For this chat, Pete and I had the distinct pleasure of sitting across the table from wine folk Pen Naish and Nicholas Brown of Black Estate. The monochrome cool of black and white might underpin this winery but colour oozes from every corner. Neither of these two started out destined for a job in wine but, like most vignerons in Aotearoa, wine found them. When Pen’s Dad stood in a paddock in North Canterbury, the vibes felt right and a deep, honest discussion ensued around establishing a vineyard, winery and, as it happens, a restaurant. Ambitious? Yes. Achievable? Clearly. A considered black building, designed by architect Richard Naish – also a relative - stands stark on the rolling hills of a wine region known for being sometimes just a bit tricky. It acts as an anchor and it’s fair to say this whanau are now well rooted to this special spot. Kids were raised here. Summers have been spent with secateurs in one hand and a barbecue tong in the other. Steve, the chocolate Labrador guar
