videoWine Spectator's No. 7 Wine of 2025
In the 19th century, wine producers in Barbaresco made a bid to join the neighboring—and more prestigious—Barolo zone. When their overtures were rejected in 1894, local enologist Domizio Cavazza founded the Barbaresco region’s first winery cooperative. It ceased operations sometime after World War I but was reborn in 1958 as the Produttori del Barbaresco. Today, focusing exclusively on Nebbiolo grown in the commune of Barbaresco, this model co-op has also been well-served by a long line of homegrown leadership; current director Aldo Vacca, whose grandfathers were founding members, succeeded his father as the group’s director. This classic blended Barbaresco earned its highest rating to date in the stellar 2021 growing season.

videoThe oldest winery in America isn't in California
The oldest winery in the Americas isn't in California—it's in Mexico. Discover why the Spanish Crown banned Mexican wine for 122 years. What questions does this video answer? Where is the oldest winery in the Americas located? Why did Spain ban Mexican wine production in 1699? How did Jesuit priests save the Mexican wine industry? What grapes grow in the Valle de Guadalupe? Where is the sparkling wine capital of Mexico? About This Video: California gets all the credit, but the oldest winery in the Americas is actually Casa Madero, located in Mexico and producing wine since 1597. In fact, early Mexican wine got so incredibly good that it started beating Spanish exports. The Spanish Crown was so threatened that in 1699, they completely banned Mexican wine production for 122 years. But one loophole remained: the Church. Jesuit priests secretly kept the vines alive, eventually moving north to plant Baja California's very first vineyards. Today, the Mexican wine comeback is explosiv

Avennia and Liminal
Chris Peterson crafts some incredible wines by Avennia and Liminal. It is my pleasure to share the incredible wines of Avennia and Liminal, both partnerships between famed winemaker Chris Peterson and former Microsoft exec Marty Taucher. They now have two lines of wines, from their estate vineyard on Red Mountain as well as wines from choice sites throughout the Columbia Valley. They are making some of the best Sauvignon Blanc and Rose in Washington State. The Liminal wines are entirely sourced from the famed WeatherEye Vineyard on the north slope of Red Mountain. I love the new wines by these wineries. I adored the 2024 Avennia ‘Arnaut’ Syrah (OB, 97) which is a total stunner that is arguably the finest edition of this wine. Learn more about Avennia at https://avennia.com and Liminal at https://www.liminalwine.com/ here are my reviews of the glorious new wines by Avennia and Liminal. 2024 Lydian White Wine- A blend of manly Sauvignon Blanc (80%) with the remainder Semillon, this offer

Did a Machine Just Win One of Wine Communication’s Biggest Awards?
A question of integrity and why it matters
videoWine Spectator's No. 9 Wine of 2025
The Castello di Ama style of elegance, intensity and tension has roots in its high-elevation vineyards, which range from 1,400 to 1,700 feet in the Gaiole UGA (Unità Geografica Aggiuntiva) of Chianti Classico. Wine production began in 1976, and today Lorenza Sebasti, a daughter of one of the founding families, co-owns and manages the estate with chief enologist Marco Pallanti, on board since 1982. The 2021 vintage delivered a quality benchmark for Chianti Classico, showcased in this brilliant red. With a bit of Merlot supporting the Sangiovese-based blend, Pallanti’s modern winemaking still honors the tradition-rooted Chianti Classico region, but it’s this wine’s sense of place that speaks loudest.

videoWine Spectator's No. 10 Wine of 2025
Isabel Ferrando has drawn attention since her debut 2003 vintage. Despite being a newcomer to the region, leaving a career in finance to learn winemaking, she has become a leading face of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s modern era. Fans know her wines under the Domaine St.-Préfert label, but in 2020 she began a new chapter, changing the name to Famille Isabel Ferrando. Joined by daughter Guillemette, she returned to the Châteauneuf tradition of blending her vineyard parcels into a single cuvée. Sourced from Ferrando’s original holdings in the Les Serres lieu-dit planted to Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre in the hottest, driest part of the appellation, it’s a wine of elegance and freshness.
