podcast· 42:14· S5E6The Ten Wines Never to be Without
We're going full-on Moses mode in this episode, nailing down the ten wines you should always have at home. Of course, personal taste plays a part. You want to have wines to hand you're going to reach for - which means your favourite styles. But beyond that, it helps to have some expert insight into the bigger picture in order to always have delicious, affordable and useful wines when you need them. Our primary objective is joyous everyday drinking. But also: what works best with food, versatile wines to serve guests, give as gifts, wines that get better over time if you buy a few, ideal wines for those impromptu celebrations, wines for both summer and winter...we even introduce the notion of, 'emergency wine'. So we define our top 10 'go-to' wine staples. We're aware this is potentially controversial territory. But we also hope it's helpful too. Helping us out in this challenging task are the fine people at Waitrose , who are sponsoring this episode. Waitrose do a fine line in wine and

Three years have gone by since a devastating CZU Lightning Complex wildfire tore through California's Santa Cruz Mountains in August 2020, destroying the home of Big Basin Vineyards winemaker Bradley Brown. In the immediate aftermath of the 2020, we hosted a podcast panel discussion with the winemakers impacted by the flames and smoke, and Bradley Brown was a participant. So today we are happy and grateful to welcome Bradley back to the podcast under happier circumstances, to talk about growth from the wildfire ashes, changes at Big Basin and in Bradley's life. Life being somewhat more surprising than fiction, the stories of Olivia Brion are inspired by the full lives of real trailblazing women from history. Cantadora is the natural evolution of Olivia Brion. Where Olivia Brion focuses on stories from history, Cantadora features women from today, giving back to the shared community in exceptional ways. Our conversation in this episode ranges from Kira's background, the varietals she works with, the challenges of building small brands, and the women that Kira has partnered with in creating the Cantadora wines.

videoKeenan Cabernet Franc 2018 Vintage is Beauty (and Beast!)
Crafted from what has become one of our most important single vineyard wines in our lineup, the 2018 Cabernet Franc from the Upper Bowl vineyard has dressed up as both the beauty and the beast for this vintage. This wine is in its initial stage of adolescence and as a result, the aromatic profile is a towering wall of undifferentiated candied and tart red fruits with a hint of sweet cocoa and crushed violets. I expect it will take a few years for these elements to assume the proper blocking on the stage of your nose and palate. For the time being this wine is certainly not as delicate as other recent vintages may have been. Grown at 2000 feet, this wine presents the usual structure that we often capture from our mountain vineyard but the mouthfeel presents a little something extra. This wine is thick, almost like it has an additional level of viscosity to it. It’s fun to drink now and experience its muscularity at full bore. You could also wait a decade and likely find that it’s dr
