podcast· 1h 53m· S6E137Snowboarding, Winemaking, and the Pursuit of Passion: Seth Kitze's Journey From Half-Pipes to Vineyards!
In this episode of The Black Wine Guy Experience, host MJ Towler sits down with special guest Seth Kitze for an insightful and engaging conversation. Seth grew up in the Yakima Valley, where wine grapes were just starting to gain popularity. Although there were only a few vineyards in the area, people were beginning to make quality wine. However, at that time, Washington state consumers were not as passionate about wine as they are today. Seth observed the growth of the wine industry and the expansion of the Tri-Cities area, which used to primarily focus on cherries and apples. Despite the limited resources, Seth witnessed the evolution of winemaking in the region. They delve into not only Seth's experiences in the snowboarding industry and the challenges of making ends meet but also his transition into the world of winemaking and the unique journey that led him to become a co-owner and winemaker of Kinsey Cellars Upside Down and the Devil is a Liar Wine. podcast· 38:25· Ep 8181. Arrowtown, New Zealand. Top things to see and do in Arrowtown, Central Otago, New Zealand
Unfortunately, it took us four trips to New Zealand before we discovered Arrowtown. We had been recommended by friends and family many times to go. They all said – you have to go to Arrowtown – it is so beautiful, but we just hadn’t found the time. This trip though we did – and we were not disappointed. What a gorgeous, quaint little village. It has a population of just over 3,000 people and is right on the edge of the picturesque Arrow River. Many people come here to explore the varied hikes or bike trails and it is also the starting point for popular wine tours, both guided and bike tours. The main street, Buckingham Street, is like out of a time capsule and is full of fabulous shops and even more fabulous cafes and restaurants, some with fascinating histories. You can wander around town and see all the centuries old miners' huts or walk through the Chinese settlement that still has houses and shops in the original condition from the gold rush days. If you are feeling lucky you can e

videoMark McLaughlin Co-founder of old Line American Single Malt.
Mark McLaughlin and Arch Watkins met in the Navy flying EA-6B Prowlers. In different active duty squadrons, they were both stationed at the same base in at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, in Washington state. After more than a decade of flying off of aircraft carriers and being stationed all over the world, they independently decided to settle down in the mid-Atlantic to focus on family, but ended up in the same Navy reserve Prowler squadron. Coincidentally, they were neighbors in Baltimore as well; Mark working in finance and Arch in engineering. With a healthy stint of travel and adventure behind them, sitting still in their new civilian desk jobs just wasn’t enough. Their shared love of whiskey and, at the time, a dearth of craft distilleries in Maryland led them to their true calling: starting their own distillery. https://www.oldlinespirits.com/our-story-old-line-whiskey-rum/

podcast· 49:28· S5E8Ukraine: Wine not War
Odessa Black. It's the name of a (Ukranian) grape variety. But it could almost be code for the desperate times the people of Ukraine are living through. In this episode, we explore the history and current context of Ukraine, hearing first-hand insights from Tania Olevska of the Ukrainian Wine Company and Svitlana Tsybak of the Beykush winery. Despite the chaos and devastation in Ukraine, wine represents a point of hope, an expression of Ukrainian culture, terroir, identity and resilience. Although what is Europe's second largest country has a long relationship with the vine, quality wine isn't one of Ukraine's most emblematic products. That started to change after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, and since 2010 there has been a quality revolution as a new wave of craft winemakers captured the public attention. Then came full-scale war with Russia in early 2022. But Ukraine's winemakers are refusing to be cowed. They soldier on, ministering to their vines as the relentless rh

podcast· 19:48“NEVER drink champagne out of a flute” | Krug Champagne
The text message from Carlos read: "Oh mate... if we can get Olivier it will be HUGE!" The schedule was tight, 20 minutes only, to quiz the sixth generation of the founding family of Krug and it's current Director Olivier Krug. Carlos reminisces on his first experience in France at the vineyard, the incredible bottle of wine he was lucky enough to taste and how each glass should taste like a symphony of flavours. Truly one of our favourite moments this year is Olivier describing how each Cuvee is created and how the "ego's" of some vintages need to be managed. Raise a glass... but not a flute (that makes sense when you watch this episode) To Krug Champagne 🥂 Watch this episode on YouTube and meet the winemaker! https://youtu.be/0KH-5qqjR28 Buy the wine, drink the wine where we get ours.
