podcast· 24:58· S2E2020: The Blocking and Tackling of Wine with Dan Petroski
Winemaker Dan Petroski made news when he sold his boutique California white wine brand Massican to Gallo late last year. But that was just the latest step on a wine journey that started ignominiously as a Columbia University football player and began in earnest a decade later after an eye-opening dinner at Le Bernardin in New York. Petroski went on to become cellarmaster at Larkmead , where he worked until 2021 while also building his own brand. "I started Massican because my mother couldn't afford Larkmead," Petroski tells host James Molesworth in the newest episode of Wine Spectator 's Straight Talk podcast. "I wanted to do something that would bring more people great wine." Plus, our beloved educator and advice columnist Dr. Vinny returns! podcast· 55:26· Ep 133Blindflug 133: EPT is’ auch okay!

It's called 'The Grenaissance'. This exhilarating revival of the grape variety known as Garnacha in Spain and Grenache in France, once the world's fourth most widely planted wine grape, which has gone from workhorse to show pony in the blink of an eye. How come? What's changed? Who's leading the charge and fuelling the new wave? And what's this we hear about inherent suitability vis a vis climate change?! We ask all these questions and more, focusing on the epicentre of Grenache renaissance: Spain.
DISTINCTION & ELEGANCE: Pol Roger is the gentlemen's Champagne, as Jean-Paul Kauffman wrote in "Voyage en Champagne". REFINEMENT & PLEASURE: It is not surprising, therefore, that Winston Churchill and even the British Royal Family should have made it their favourite over the years. This refinement reflects a whole lifestyle. It is also a source of infinite pleasure. Pol Roger Champagne has a soul, created by the union of a family's spirit and the character of a vineyard. The winery and the cellars are located on the celebrated and noble Avenue de Champagne in Epernay, in the very place where the heart of Champagne beats. The purity and nobility of Pol Roger Champagne is also the fruit of the know-how, passed down from generation to generation. From the harvest in the region's best vineyards to the painstaking work in the cellar, each gesture has its importance.

podcast· 44:58· Ep 81Wine Words Matter - Meg Maker and A New Language for Wine - Ep. 81
Does wine speak make your eyes roll or glaze over? One of the most intimidating things about wine isn't about what's in your glass - it's the words used to describe it. Do tasting notes that allude to a pasture in Southern France, stewed plums or brown spices (whatever those are!) turn you off from wine? You're not alone. The way we talk about and communicate sets wine apart from other alcoholic beverages. Maybe this is why younger consumers aren't big wine fans. Wine words matter. That's why today's guest, wine journalist, educator and Terroir Review.com founder Meg Maker says it's time for the languages of wine to change - and we the Marys, agree! Meg has been researching the lexicon - or language - of wine and shares some fascinating discoveries and perspectives. Lately she's been speaking and writing about a new approach to talking about wine. The goal - use words that are more welcoming, approachable and relatable, whether you're a wine pro or just love wine.

podcast· 57:00· Ep 513Friends of the Pod Series - Ep 513: The Divine Dolcetto of Diano d'Alba with Giulio Abrigo of Abrigo Giovanni
I welcome to the show my friend Giulio Abrigo of Abrigo Giovanni Azienda Agricola , who focuses on the exquisite Dolcetto in Diano d'Alba in the Barolo zone of Piemonte. Abrigo Giovanni is a small family operation, operating on just 13 ha or 32 acres mainly in Diano d'Alba -- the site of the winery and the family home. Dolcetto Diano d'Alba is one of a handful of DOCG zones for the grape – stricter controls and the top Dolcetto wines are made in this area. Here, the elevation, the soils, and the exposition are ideal for this highly underrated grape. Abrigo Giovanni focuses on Dolcetto but for the past 11 years they also make a highly rated and awarded Barolo from the site of "Ravello" which has caught the attention of many wine critics, and, although not available in the US, they make the single best nocciole (hazelnut spread) I have ever had in my life. This is a fascinating look at the passion behind making a wine that is part of a long legacy and tradition, but frequently flies unde
