Orange Juice Alternatives: Easy Cocktail Substitutes When You’re Out of OJ
Picture this. You’ve got friends coming over, the ice is chilling nicely, the bottles are lined up on the counter, and you’re halfway through making drinks when you realize the orange juice carton is empty. I’ve been there more times than I’d like to admit. The good news is that running out of orange juice […] The post Orange Juice Alternatives: Easy Cocktail Substitutes When You’re Out of OJ appeared first on Crafty Bartending .

Review: Frey Ranch Bourbon 10 Years Old (2026)
It’s easy to criticize “grain-to-glass” as a designation, but by any definition, Nevada’s Frey Ranch certainly qualifies. The family owned and operated company grows its own grains, then malts, mashes, distills, ages, and bottles all whiskeys on site. They even create their own “peat” via a home-built bioreactor, which accelerates the decay of farm-sourced organic… The post Review: Frey Ranch Bourbon 10 Years Old (2026) appeared first on Drinkhacker: The Insider's Guide to Good Drinking .

We are Family
Our choir concert was yesterday at our local performing arts centre. The theme was FAMILY. We sang a medley from Mamma Mia plus songs such as Dance with My Father, Chosen Family, Sister Song, In My Daughter's Eyes and We are Family. The youth choir also sang songs and there were poetry readings and dance acts too. Our usual choir mistress had taken this academic year off to spend more time with her family but is reported to be returning in September. We had been led this past year by a stand-in who has been quite amusing, even when she tells us off for doing something wrong. Her style and approach has been quite different but nevertheless likeable. Of course yesterday was baking hot and we are not allowed to bring water bottles onto the stage, so under the lighting and smoke effects, we were boiling. There are about 80 of us in the choir altogether. Four of them are from the same family - father, mother with their son and daughter in their early twenties. Sadly the father died tw

June 2026: Instead of a newsletter… Wheat beer
Andreas Krennmair has a new book out focusing on ‘Bavarian white beer’, AKA Hefeweizen, AKA wheat beer. And it’s reminded us to check in with this intriguing style. Out and about in Bristol’s pubs yesterday one thing that struck us was that German wheat beer is a style that’s become quite mainstream in the UK […] June 2026: Instead of a newsletter… Wheat beer originally posted at Boak & Bailey's Beer Blog

June 21: Father’s Day
It's Father's Day. You know, there seems to be some confusion as to what fathers want to do on Father's Day. There's this idea that we want to eat in fancy restaurants, participate in enforced "fun" activities with our children, and perhaps gather with other fathers to communally sip craft beers that might have a fruit as their primary flavor. That the day must be meticulously planned and executed according to a rigid schedule. It's as if somewhere along the line, Father's Day was kitted out with a silk scarf and a clipboard. It became a chore, an ordeal, a reflection of Mother's Day. What we fathers really want is something much more primitive, pagan, atavistic. We want to randomly wander through the day with heavy glass in hand, ever brimmed-up with powerful brown liquors, with no plan whatsoever except to breathe in the primal scent of large chunks of raw animal flesh being seared on local fires. We want our children in sight and perhaps even running amok, as proof of our unimpeacha

Everything You Know About Bumbu is a Lie: The Bottling of Bajan Bananas Foster
I’m not even going to ask if anyone has “stumbled” across this bottling as I have in previous articles. If you are in the UK or Europe Bumbu is almost unavoidable. Even my local supermarket sells it. It is frequently and aggressively discounted. It has the big bucks backing so can afford to act as... Tout Pret Picnic 2025
Named Picnic, it smashes the brief for that purpose. Drink as is or give it a slight chill, you'll need a backup bottle once your friends splash it in their glass, that's for sure. Made with Shiraz sourced from Rutherglen, there is an energy and vibe here that calls for plentiful plates of food, big smiles and groovy tunes. Red currants, cherries, strawberries and a little earthy drive, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a heavy Pinot Noir. Black pepper spices run a neat trail through the core with a little dark chocolate nib for good measure, not to mention a red apple acid crunch and zip. But there is no escaping its upbeat feels. For what it is, it's great stuff! 92/100 Region: Rutherglen RRP: $30 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Thatchers Zero, Somerset Cider, 0%
The Non-Alcoholic market continues to grow despite lagging sales in Alcoholic Beverages. Any Beer or Cider manufacturer without a product in the NA category is missing out. Kosciuszko Pinot Noir 2024
If an easy-going Pinot Noir with a bit more depth is your thing, wander over this way and check out this Kosciuszko from Tumbarumba. A stand and deliver type - what you see is what you get. Plums, dark cherries and baked strawberries build a respectable fruit profile flanked by twigs, mushroom compost and woodsy spices. There is a composure here which I like, not to mention a persistent finish. It's not trying to be anything it's not, yet it delivers the goods with humility. Good stuff. 89/100 Region: Tumbarumba RRP: $32 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Tout Pret Brunch Fiano 2025
Rutherglen rarely makes an appearance on the Qwine tasting bench, so I was keen to get into a few from Tout Pret (pronounced too-pray rather than lazy Australian tout-prett). Fiano makes up this Brunch wine. Winemaker Lachlan Murray tells me you can drink it before 12 and after 12. Not bad! Clever labels, too, I might add, based on his Murray clan tartans. Yellow flowers, Tasty cheese, yellow peach and lemon curd aromas deliver a curious intro that builds a desire to keep going back for another whiff. There is some complexity and palate weight which ups the interest - yellow stonefruit, lemon curd and lemon juice sit front and centre. A green tea tannin-like texture builds fabulous momentum with a delicate lick of cinnamon spice wrapping it up neatly. It's certainly a wine that needs food by its side to sing, and I'm not game to top the winemaker's Brunch suggestion of a bacon and egg roll. Good stuff. 90/100 Region: Ruherglen RRP: $25 Source: Sample Winery Website S

Kosciuszko Sauvignon Blanc 2026
Regulars to this site would know that Sauvignon Blanc is not my favourite friend, particularly those grassy, herby types. I'm pleased to report that this Kosciuszko sits on the tropical fruit spectrum and goes okay. Almost water clear, it delivers passionfruit, green melon, papaya and lemon juice. Some green apples try to emerge with a green tendril-like trait trying its best to get noticed, but that is shouldered away. Clean and cleansing acidity whips through with a little texture to pursue. What pulls it back is that the palate is clipped and does not reach as far as I hoped. A good drink no less. 88/100 Region: Tumbarumba RRP: $24 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X
