Tax Stamps – BIB – & Other
Until 1985, the government required distillers to put tax strips draped over each bottle neck and cap to signify that tax had been paid. Because so many people are hunting and discovering old bottles and dusties, here’s a little information that might help you date a bottle. Of course, the Green Bottled in Bond tax strip states the Season and year the whiskey was put in the barrel and then the Season and year the whiskey was put in the bottle. “Tax strips are the blue (if exported), green or red strips that go up the side of the neck and over the cap and will either say U.S. Internal Revenue or Bureau of ATF. If it says ATF on the strip then your bottle is from 1977 – 1985. If it mentions the IRS then it’s pre-1977. We can break it down to smaller chunks fo time thanks to tax strip changes over the years. 1934-1944: Weight/Proof Marks on ends, no “Series” near Eagle’s feet. Upper-left edge reads “US Internal Revenue” 1945-1972: Words “Series” and “111″/”112″ added near Eagles feet. Upp

What Bartenders Should Know About Cutting People Off
Last Call – for You… People sometimes get to the point where more alcohol just isn’t going to do them any good. They wobble; they lose fine motor control; their speech is slurred. It may be a question of driving; it may be a question of retaining the ability to stand up; it may be … Continue reading What Bartenders Should Know About Cutting People Off The post What Bartenders Should Know About Cutting People Off appeared first on New York Bartending School .

Should Bartenders Work Catered Events vs. Work at Bars?
What’s better? You probably have a regular gig with a local dive (small neighborhood bar) that pays the rent. It’s nice to have a home port that you can rely on. As an adjunct to that, there are other opportunities that don’t involve regularly working for a paycheck from someone else. You could provide an … Continue reading Should Bartenders Work Catered Events vs. Work at Bars? The Grand Rehearsal + Video
For us, being a part of someone's big day is just as important as perfecting our cocktail recipes, choosing the right glassware or finding the perfect bow tie-vest combination. Yes, we enjoy making cocktails, but we also just love going above and beyond for our clients. We take personal pleasure in becoming a small part of each couple's story.

Go Inside the Historic Breweries and Intimate Izakayas in Fushimi, Kyoto’s Under-the-Radar Sake District
Kyoto is best known for its wildly beautiful architecture, like the Fushimi Inari Shrine and Fushimi Castle, also known as Momoyama Castle. Travelers who dig a bit deeper into the city’s Fushimi district, however, discover another key aspect of its cultural identity: sake. As legend has it, Fushimi sake is especially good because of its water. Expert sake production began with Gekkeikan, a brewery helmed by the Okura family since 1637. Sommelier Kim Prokoshyn Comes Clean About Her ‘Forever Wine’ and Love of Mezcal Margaritas
Like most of us who studied the humanities in college (hello, postcolonial studies), Kim Prokoshyn didn’t turn her art history degree into her career. At least, not directly. Prokoshyn is head sommelier at Scampi, a southern Italian restaurant that opened near Manhattan’s Union Square last December. Prior to that, she worked with mentor Patrick Cappiello at NYC wine destinations Rebelle and Pearl & Ash restaurants. Garnishes
A garnish has a two-fold purpose in alcoholic drinks. One is to enhance or compliment flavors, and the other is to enhance the visual look of the drink. When you get right down to it, it is wild to think that a floating piece of fruit skin can justify the price of an expensive drink, but … Continue reading Garnishes The post Garnishes appeared first on New York Bartending School .

Why You Should Never Pour Your Own Sake
All drinking culture is rich with tradition. Unspoken codes and customs find us clinking glasses, buying rounds, and tapping the bar before taking a shot, regardless of our surroundings. The primary ritual to keep in mind when drinking sake, the Japanese beverage in the midst of an American renaissance, is to never pour your own glass. The problem here is that the typical office team building ideas tend to bring out more sighs that smiles among co-workers, and it can often feel like a child's play rather than a grown-up's activity. But, put a cocktail glass in almost any adult's hand, and immediately, attitudes begin to shift.

Love Bird – Craft Valentine’s Day Cocktail
In today's busy world, it seems like Valentine's day has a way of quietly sneaking up on us every year, leaving us somewhat unprepared to do something special for our better halves. And while chocolate-covered strawberries, roses, and a copy of 50 Shades of Grey are perfectly acceptable valentine's day gifts, we thought you might want to set the mood with something a little less cliche this year.
