Alcoholic Daze - Chapter 4
The continuing saga of Alcoholic Daze.... Over the coming years, we repeated our August booze cruises to France or Germany, taking Snoopy with us. It was a great way of holidaying abroad with the dog , getting the satisfaction of being somewhere foreign and enjoying life under canvas. Snoopy used to hate the return part of the journey as it involved visiting an extremely tall, dark and handsome young vet near Calais who produced awfully thick hypodermic needles to inject the anti-worming preparation necessary for the pet passport paperwork at Dover. As before, we used a nearby camp-site to Cite Europe on our return journey and, as before, stocked up with a years' supply of wine. Again, as before, we were always lucky if we had a single bottle left to celebrate at Christmas, but very little of it was consumed by me. I was beginning to see a pattern forming. By the time we were nudging our fifties, Greg suddenly became ill. He first had a series of small heart attacks

Senate bean soup. Being an antipodean, I had no idea such a soup existed, though the idea of pork and beans has frequently punctuated my life. After reading the recipe and the story behind it, in the NY Times, I felt a call to action. The whisper of several powerful forces. . . Winter, pork, memory, simplicity. . . I used my mum’s old slow cooker. An old Tiger brand thermal cooker from the 1990’s. A pot within an insulated pot. . . I used the inner chamber to heat and cook all the ingredients (400g dried navy beans, 3 carrots, 2 potatoes, 2 ham hocks, a onion, five garlic, half a tablespoon of paprika, a large pinch thyme, pepper, salt, a knob of butter and 2L of water) and then left it overnight. After an 8 hour sleep the soup was still steaming and 65 degrees C. At this point mash the potatoes and a small portion of beans, stir into the soup; break up the pork meat and remove the bones and skin. The soup will gleam with goodness and connective collagen. . . As

Bendigo's best foot forward
2025 Mondillo Central Otago Pinot Noir RRP $58Bendigo may be situated 80 kilometres from Queenstown but its latest 2025 Pinot Noir reflects all the majestic beauty of the deep south. The new 2025 vintage (officially released in July this year) shows the estate’s silkiest side with this wine's velvety smooth mouthfeel layered over purity of dark fruit in a wine with a savoury mid palate. Its vibrancy reveals an accessible and approachable wine to enjoy now, in its youth, and its firm structure ...

Turkey Flat Sparkling Shiraz NV
Epic autumn appeal, a fireside friend in winter, stunning in spring or an evening poolside treat during summer, sparkling Shiraz is such a versatile drink and deserves more kudos than being seen as a one-trick pony for Christmas lunch. Batch 19 of this Turkey Flat is matured using the Solera system, spending up to 36 months in seasoned oak, then another year in bottle before it was released in 2025. Juicy mulberries, blueberry paste and Black Forest cake roll out the welcome mat. Dark cherries frolic about with dense dark chocolate brownie notes. A well-balanced dosage is the key to bringing all elements together. Fruit bun spices run out to a persistent finish - that length! Such a great fizz and party starter, big love! 94/100 Region: Barossa RRP: $60 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Beer In Ads #5261: Bockbier Aus Der Actienbrauerei Basel
Two years ago I decided to concentrate on Bock ads for awhile. Bock, of course, may have originated in Germany, in the town of Einbeck. Because many 19th century American breweries were founded by German immigrants, they offered a bock at certain times of the year, be it Spring, Easter, Lent, Christmas, or what have […]

Hiatus Beers Non Alcoholic Lager
These Hiatus non alcoholic beers are well worth exploring. This lager is a most respectable drink. Jules Ryan is at the helm at Hiatus. With some serious brewing knowledge and experience after stints at Stone & Wood, Balter and Little Creatures, he saw a hole in the market that he has filled admirably with his Hiatus beers. Brewed as normal, it then undergoes the process of removing alcohol. Malty with a delicate citrus presence and low in bitterness, this is a clean and crisp lager. It's a beer of good shape with a decent length, but given the choice, I'd run to the Pacific Ale in the range. Curiously, there are a few commercial, large-production non-alcoholic lagers on the market, and I much preferred this to them. Over to you... 90/100 RRP: ~$5, ~$70 (24x 375mL cans) Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Vin Sol Flōrus Fiano 2025
A great little Fiano! Can I keep the review at that? Armed and ready for long lunches, the presence and interest delivered elevate this Vin Sol Flōrus Fiano. Expected cut pears and poached pears are joined by a sizzling splash of lemon juice. The perfume from little white flowers adds aromatic delight. Almond meal and ginger add savoury nuances, but I'm leaning into the tonic-like texture that plants itself on the mid-palate that seemingly refuses to move. The hum of ginger and cinnamon spices on close builds a terrific moreishness. It's a really smart Fiano that I'd happily recommend. 92/100 Region: McLaren Vale RRP: $27 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Penelope Blackberry Old Fashioned
I’d like to thanks the folks at Penelope Bourbon and their PR team for sending this sample with no strings attached. Hello my friends! It is time for a bonus post. I was planning to do this yesterday. I always do bonus posts on Friday, but I just plum forgot. Tonight’s subject is actually something I didn’t plan to review. It was sent along to me by mistake as I had already turned down the sample thinking that you folks might find it a bit outside the norm for the focus of the site. But when it landed on my doorstep, I figured what the heck? I mean I’m not going to force y’all to read this, you are grown adults and can make that decision on your own. So what is it? Well, it is a premade, bottled, cocktail. You open it up and pour it over ice. And while I know that an Old Fashioned is basically the easiest cocktail to make outside of two ounces of whiskey in a glass, they put a nice spin on it by adding blackberry to the mix. But before we get into the review, let’s let the producer tal
