Here I am practicing my arithmetic, again. In the past two weeks, I’ve tasted through the 2026 Virginia Governor’s Cup Wine Competition Case Winners (12), and I served Virginia wine with three courses at a diner party I hosted for friends (3). So yes, that adds up to 15, proving there are numerous ways to...

+1
It is well known by now that Virginia vineyards suffered significant losses due to a freeze on April 21. This is truly heartbreaking and gives testimony to the struggles of farming. Early bud break in the vineyard is always risky since a frost or freeze can kill primary buds, the main producers of grapes...

Enzo Bartoli – Piemonte Couture
“Enzo Bartoli offers a cross-section of Piemonte's most significant wine-growing areas.” Vinifera Mundi In their own words, Enzo Bartoli is an identity that encapsulates the idea of style. It is the signature that seals a collection of wines capable of telling, with minimalistic elegance, the sartorial soul of Piedmont. A very interesting wine – Segura Viudas “Clos Juvència” 2010 from Penedes, Spain
I half expected I’d bought a dud considering the clear glass bottle and 16years of age but as the deeply amber wine’s aroma touched the edge of my nostrils, a joyful familiarity came over me: “Reminds me of Champagne!”

Champagne Bérêche & Fils: My Lunch with Raphaël Bérêche
The dining room at Marcus, in Montréal’s Four Seasons Hotel, gleams with marble and brass. Light streams through floor-to-ceiling windows, catching on polished glassware and the curve of plush banquettes. There’s a soft hum from the open kitchen. In a corner nook of cosy banquettes, Raphaël Bérêche stands as he speaks, a glass in hand, posture relaxed yet assured. His tone is both poetic and practical, shaped by years of experience. The conversation flows easily; technical at times but with such obvious underlying passion and conviction that it is captivating all the same . He talks about time as if it were an ingredient, and about how every step, from vineyard to cellar, serves the pursuit of a clearly defined goal. A Family Estate Rooted in Time and Place Bérêche & Fils was founded in 1847 in Ludes, a Premier Cru village perched on the northern slope of the Montagne de Reims. Today, fifth-generation brothers Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche carry the legacy forward. Vincent oversees the v

Artuke Finca de los Locos, 2021
Blend of Tempranillo, Graciano, Viura grapes - I asked for an unusual Rioja with a lighter touch. An interesting chat about Graciano ensued. It is being used more widely in Rioja adding perfume and a higher acid freshness. Evident in the primary floral note aromas. Interesting to have the familiar tannic structure restrained and balanced by acidity. Viura, the white grape widely planted in Rioja (Macabeo in France), also adds to the floral character. Viura also has decent aging potential so with these two grape varieties blended with more familiar Tempranillo, this is an unusual treat from Rioja. Bottle weight 582.5g - A decent effort for sustainability. UK price ~£30
