I recently attended a lunch at Social Corner in downtown Vancouver paired with a selection of Côté Mas wines from Domaines Paul Mas in the Languedoc in southern France. Yelland & Papps Limited Cuvée Grenache 2025
I've had a lot of Grenache in my time, and I must say, this Yelland & Papps Limited Cuvée sits on top of the pile. Wow! What an incredible, precise and insatiably delicate release this is. There's a wonderful sense of Pinosity here, reinforcing the old saying that Grenache is everything Pinot wants to be. Sourced from dry-grown 1956 Vine Vale vines rooted in sandy soils and matured for 11 months in French oak (32% new), it's an effortlessly elegant expression. Juicy blueberries, blueberry coulis, mulberries and red cherries glide across the palate, with a fine smear of squishy raspberries bringing irresistible charm. The superfine tannin profile is utterly seductive, allowing the fruit to float gracefully through the mouth before subtle cola notes emerge with air. Delicate spices wrap themselves around the fruit and linger across a finish that is both persistent and calming. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this evolve over several days, confirming it has plenty of life a

Hayes Family Wines Block 2 Grenache 2025
Big love for this excellent Hayes Family Wines Block 2 Grenache made under the keen eye of winemaker Andrew Seppelt. Juicy and vibrant, it pops and slaps. Absolutely delicious! From Hayes Family Wines' certified organic 1948 plantings, this tiny two barrel release is a stunning expression of Barossa Grenache after yields were slashed by 85%. Bursting with energy, raspberries, raspberry rope, redcurrants and red apple skin race across the palate, with a crunchy red apple acidity keeping everything lively. Give it a swirl and blueberries emerge, adding another layer of intrigue. Super fine tannins provide a delicate grip without interrupting the flow, leaving the wine sleek, pliable and effortlessly drinkable. It's packed with interest yet dances with freshness, making each sip even more compelling than the last. Delicious and ridiculously moreish, go here. 95/100 Region: Barossa RRP: $50 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow:&n

Cellers de Scala Dei – Pla dels Àngels 2025
It’s nothing new to say that rosé has come a long way in a short time. Well, maybe it’s more the case that we should say Provençal rosé has come a long way to be basically ‘the’ rosé. I remember attending Vinisud back in 2014 when it was still going strong and, after meeting Verónica Ortega for the first time and tasting her nascent DO Bierzo wines, I strolled over to the Provence section. I swear I was able to see it from across the pavillion. Like a lighthouse on […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription.

Varney Wines GSM 2023
More herbal than the juicy, fruit-driven style this Varney GSM has become known for, this 2023 slides back a notch or two from those that have come before. It opens with raspberries and blackberries before menthol, dried herbs and a subtle hint of tomato paste take the lead. Chocolate, stripped bark and earthy notes build further complexity, while a blanket of spice settles comfortably over the finish. It's balanced and remains an enjoyable drink, offering plenty of savoury character and interest. That said, it doesn't quite capture the energy, generosity or wow factor of previous releases. In all, it's a solid GSM. 92/100 Region: McLaren Vale RRP: $35 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Kaesler The Fave Grenache 2025
Demanding your attention with every sip, The Fave from Kaesler is nothing short of an excellent example of Barossa Grenache. From 1930s vines, the fruit was hand-picked and whole-bunch fermented with wild yeast before spending 15 days on skins, it's a wine that balances power and poise with grace. Strawberries, vibrant red cherries and raspberry coulis burst from the glass, wrapped in a fine weave of spice that never overplays its hand. The textural detail is captivating, with a trail of brick dust-like tannins providing shape, persistence and character. There's terrific length and drive, yet it waltzes across the palate with elegance rather than force. An excellent Grenache that captures the variety's charm with confidence, finesse and irresistible moreish appeal. Grenache, a great grape: what wine does it make and which to drink?
Grenache is one of the world’s most planted grape varieties, but it is often used in blends, e.g. “GSM” (grenache, syrah, mourvèdre). It deserves more attention on its own since it can make outstanding wines of all colours and types, red, white, rosé, dry, sweet, even sparkling. I have, on several occasions, participated as a […] Continue reading: Grenache, a great grape: what wine does it make and which to drink? The Holy Trinity
While on a trip to Porto and the Douro recently, a colleague and I started talking about “field blends” and I admitted that I find the mystique given to them to be a bit, how shall we say… ‘bullshit’. It’s often part of the branding at many wineries that, if they have an old vineyard, they’ll upsell the aspect that they pick all the grapes together and ferment the one as one, singular, beautiful wine. The idea being that over time, the vineyard has been planted with a vast array […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription.

Pour Provence Rosé and Let the Celebration Begin
Decades ago, I spent a summer in Paris between my junior and senior years in college. As I immersed myself in French culture from sun-up to sundown, my love for travel was solidified as was my new-found adoration of good wine paired with food. A particularly fond memory of that summer was the annual Bastille […] READ MORE The post Pour Provence Rosé and Let the Celebration Begin appeared first on Grape Experiences .

Varney Wines Entrada Grenache Cinsault Rosé 2026
From 70+ year old bush vine Grenache with a splash of young Cinsault (12%), this Rosé from Varney Wines carries itself with confidence. Take this to a picnic and you're set. A salmon hue with the faintest orange tint sets the scene. Strawberries, cherries and pomegranate burst from the glass before a subtle lick of orange peel adds extra interest. There's a lovely sheet of texture flowing through the mid-palate, aided by a portion of wild yeast fermentation in seasoned French oak, bringing some weight. Delicate spice quietly threads its way through the palate before finishing bone dry. The close is all about a crunchy red apple acidity that keeps everything taut and draws you straight back for another sip. Refreshing yet textural, this is a highly approachable Rosé with plenty of appeal. 92/100 Region: McLaren Vale RRP: $30 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Head Wines RED Grenache 2025
The fusion of four Barossa and Eden Valley sites delivers a Grenache that bowls down the line with reliable line and length. Energetic aromas explode from the glass featuring dried red petals and roses, red berries and sarsaparilla. The fruit is juicy and silky, flowing about with ease. It's a wine that you can reach for time and again given its moreishness that is driven by tense, earthy tannins and finishes dry with a powdery note that whispers, calling you back. If the neighbours call you over for a drink, take two because one will evaporate in no time. 92/100 Region: Barossa RRP: $30 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Bethany Blue Quarry Contours Vineyard Grenache 2024
Sleek, sexy and carrying a little more depth than first impressions suggest, this Bethany Blue Quarry Contours Vineyard Grenache is immediately engaging. Coming from 50+ year-old vines, much younger than its Manse Vineyard sibling, I couldn't get enough of this. Softly spiced dark cherries reign supreme, while expressive raspberries bring a pretty, juicy lift that keeps everything bright and energetic. There’s an attractive savoury-sweet interplay at work too, with a flash of dark chocolate and even a suggestion of Cherry Ripe tucked amongst the fruit. It’s a wine that feels slinky and curvaceous, flowing effortlessly across the palate without ever sacrificing flavour intensity. The real highlight is the length. The fruit extends with confidence, and there’s no denying the juicy factor that makes each sip so inviting. Faint silty tannins provide just enough structure to frame the generosity without interrupting the wine’s natural charm. This is one of those Grenaches

Bethany Blue Quarry Manse Vineyard Grenache 2024
Not as expensive as its Contours Vineyard stablemate, this Manse Vineyard Grenache offers a fuller, weightier expression from the outset. From 1924 planted vines that dig their feet into clay soils, darker fruits and berries lift from the glass wth scents of dried red petals, earthy nuances and a dusting of dark chocolate. The palate follows suit, bringing dark cherry and plum fruit with an earthy drive that keeps everything grounded. There is more heft here compared to more delicate expressions of Grenache with the fruit carrying good concentration and drive. Neat and composed, it comes together comfortably rather than spectacularly with the fruit and savoury elements working in unison. A solid, enjoyable Grenache that goes about its work with little fuss and drinks well. 92/100 Region: Barossa RRP: $50 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Tresor Des Sables Tavel 2023 Review – Intense Rose
When it comes to interesting and, dare we say, somewhat robust rose wines, we almost always look towards Tavel in France to enjoy bottles made with the Rosé de Saignée method. This method effectively is bleeding off juice that is macerating on the grape skins as pigmentation is building. So rather than, say, a soft ... Read more
