Ben Nevis 2003 (WhiskyNerds)
The WhiskyNerds have been quiet in the past couple of years. The last I know of was a French Brandy and a Secret Islay but that was back in 2023 already. I think it's simple: their bar stays high, so if nothing crosses their path, they don't have to bottle anything. Now they're back with a Ben Nevis 2003 . A year that we have never tried before, as far as I know. There's only a dozen of releases in any case.

Ben Nevis 1973 (Thompson Bros)
Wait, another 52 year-old after Angus' Glen Garioch? That's right. This Ben Nevis 1973 was bottled some time ago by the guys at Dornoch Castle.I met the Thompson Brothers at the Limburg Whisky Fair a couple of weeks ago. Lovely chaps. First they brought me down to earth with a random blind tasting of their Mystery Malt series (if you hadn't heard about the concept yet - it's very interesting). It really plays tricks on your mind. After that, this Ben Nevis left a deep impression, even though it was the last stand of the day and I had already tried some stunning things.

LMK Copycat: Ben Nevis, Secret Irish, Secret Speyside
LMK is Leung Man King (aka Brian) who lives in Hong Kong / Taiwan. A very relaxed guy who is well related to the Asian whisky scene. You may remember his name from my Macau festival article. Recently he came over to Europe for several weeks, visiting Limburg, Feis Ile, Scotland and other parts of Europe. Dedication! There's no website yet, so follow him on Instagram for now.One of his series is called LMK Copycat . It features funny labels that often mimic legendary labels from the past. Other labels have his friends sitting in a bar while he's disguised as a cat.

Milroy’s of Soho: Ben Nevis, Clynelish, Tun 89…
Milroy's of Soho just released a new batch with four single malts and one single grain whisky. There are a couple of interesting things, starting with a 0 year old Clynelish (new make spirit indeed). There's also a very old teaspooned Speyside malt and a 43 year old North British.

Bowmore 2005 / 2x Ben Nevis 1996 (The Whisky Agency)
The first stand that I visited at the recent Limburg Whisky Fair was The Whisky Agency . To say hello to organisers Meike and Carsten, but also to have a look at their latest selections of course. It was an impressive line-up, nicely presented in wooden display holders.

Ben Nevis, Benriach, Tullibardine, Balmenach (Maltbarn)
The Limburg festival is coming up. Since some people are asking me about it: yes, I will be there on Saturday. Don't hestitate to come over and say hello. Maltbarn will present a series of new releases in Limburg, six if I'm not mistaken. We've had a sneak peak so here are our first thoughts on the Ben Nevis 1996, Benriach 1995, Balmenach 2002 and Tullibardine 1993. Most of these are names and vintages that we've seen before, perhaps split casks. Ben Nevis 29 yo 1996 (47,6%, Maltbarn 2026, bourbon cask, 152 btl.) Nose: bingo. A very waxy profile, quite sophisticated. Ripe pears, some quinces and hay. But really it is mostly about vegetal oils, some rubbed lemon skins and green leaves, along with subtle drops of menthol and whiffs of wool and grist. High complexity, but no fruit overload yet. Mouth: still not bursting with fruits - mostly about the sweetish oiliness again. Beeswax, paraffin and pollen, mixed with chalk. Mid-palate some mango and peach comes out, with candied lemon
