Vinteloper Shiraz 2025
The back label is emblazoned with the words "Not the Shiraz your dad drinks", and it wouldn't be. But I reckon you could convert him over to this ripping expression from Vinteloper. What a cracker! Bunchy and savoury notes set the tone and I'm all in. So expressive and moreish, there is a sip-slow vibe about its swagger, but I can't help but lean into the plums, mulberry compote, shards of dark chocolate and fine sheets of spice that are rippled through the palate. There is a fabulous tension between the fruit density and savoury pleasure that drives through to an elongated finish. Above all, it's that complexity that has me fixated. I'd comfortably categorise this as "Fitzroy piss" - those trendy Fitzroy and Brunswick bars and restaurants would smash through bottles of this stuff all in the name of pleasure and delight. Go here. 93/100 Region: Adelaide Hills RRP: $40 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , Li

Vinteloper Rogue Pinot Noir 2024
This is an uber cool Pinot that evokes wine bar beats with the lights turned down low. Some wines seek analytics and scores, yet others, like this, seek companionship, cosy corners and echoes of laughter. Splash this around liberally and you'll know what I mean. David Bowley has been sourcing fruit from this vineyard for some time, but these barrels showed some 'pixie dust', so he says. From the Kuipto district of the Adelaide Hills, it sees French oak for ten months (35% new). Dark cherries, blackberry leaf, orange peel, cured meats and bacon hock make a mighty first impression. Waves of savoury nuances follow and cascade effortlessly in the form of dried leaves, twigs, tilled earth, a faint hint of pine needle and mushroom compost. Delicate spices wrap themselves around the frame and drive long. Although a touch linear on the palate, the use of whole bunches is evident with that savoury thumbprint. Perhaps the best way to consider this wine in three words is savoury, effortles

Camino Wine Co Gamay 2025
Dang! Dangerously slurpable and eminently smashable, this is a silky delight that will take pride of place on a lazy Susan and take down a Chinese banquet effortlessly. What a joy it was to review this Camino Wine Co Gamay. Sourced from the Adelaide Hills, it was made with 25% whole bunches before being pressed to seasoned French oak. Elegant and seductive, fine ripples of earthiness and delicate spices ride on the coattails of blueberry and mulberry fruit. It firms up late on the palate, which pulls it back a peg, but those creases should be ironed out with more bottle age in the next couple of years. Excellent drinking, no less, and guaranteed to swiftly evaporate from your glass, it's a great addition to the ever-expanding Camino Wine Co range. 93/100 Region: Adelaide Hills RRP: $60 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Camino Wine Co Chardonnay 2024
When I hear the suggestion that white wines don't need decanting, I don't entirely subscribe to it. Some whites would absolutely benefit from the opportunity to open up, and this Camino Wine Co Chardonnay is a perfect example. Sourced from two Adelaide Hills vineyards, the fruit was whole bunch pressed and sent to barrel where it underwent wild yeast fermentation before spending eight months in seasoned French oak. The shift on day two of tasting was significant due to being open that bit more. It was tense with some curious aromas initially, but time gave life to yellow grapefruit, lemon meringue, and lemon curd. Nougat creaminess and almond nuttiness play a shy hand with some old school lemonade acidity for good measure, leaving a sherbety tang to muse over. Mind you, I'd recommend having this with food to handle that energetic acidity. Think temupra prawns or even a classic Schnity. 90/100 Region: Adelaide Hills RRP: $60 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to

First Drop Wines Moderno Barbera 2023
Bright and touch lighter in the glass than some Barberas I've tasted of late, this release from First Drop Wines pushes its case for a cool evening with a hearty meal. Sourced from the Adelaide Hills, juicy red cherries, plums and energetic blackberries build a respectable fruit profile. Tilled earth, olive tapenade, and tree bark add savoury nuances with a fine mist of soft spices coating the palate. Red apple skin rushes late with crunchy red apple acidity on close. Tense tannins cling to a long finish and tease with a moreish factor. A most enjoyable take on this Piedmont delight. 92/100 Region: Adelaide Hills RRP: $30 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

First Drop Forza Nebbiolo 2018
With some gentle encouragement, this Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo from Firs Drop Wines slowly emerged from its chrysalis. Tame with a muted nose on opening, you need to sift about to get it going. Dried purple petals and lavender eventually mustered up the courage to get things underway. Tight through the mid-palate, it really hit its straps on the third day of tasting, which enabled a few more runs to hit the scoreboard. All the varietal things shape up with cherry cola, dried plums and dark cherries met by a slew of savoury delights. Dusty tannins are mid-palate focused and tight, pointing to a long future ahead. But to drink now, a long decant is needed to see it at its best. 91/100 Region: Adelaide Hills RRP: $60 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Iniquity Gold, Batch 008
I’m often asked, “Which do you think is the best Australian whisky”? It’s a difficult question to answer, although I had a fair crack at answering it in this article here. Shiraz, mostly
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Seventy Six Cabernet Shiraz 2006 . Opens hard and abrasive, but softens in time. Spiced Christmas pudding and shellac. Stylistically true to the house. I think this was the first release of the Seventy Six. I've written about it before . . . Then as now - I wonder - How finely/cynically can you segment the market when you ultimately offer only one sort of (red) wine - something dense, full, warm and old fashioned. . . SC Pannell Adelaide Hills Syrah 2012 . The 2013 edition went on to win the Jimmy Watson. This would be a tricky wine in a 100% blinded line up. It has a DMS / über black currant nose; thankfully I spotted the Burgundy bottle, bringing my formulation back to cool climate Shiraz. . . Full and plump, cherry ripe, with lovely fine inky tannins. Wolf Blass Black Label 2002. Shiraz, Cabernet and Malbec. Barossa and Langhorne Creek. From my cellar. Cork (50% stained). A whiff of glue and v/a to start, but then it's all lush oak (there's F
