🎧The Wine Makers – Keith Beavers: The Great American Wine Tour (and a Raid on Phil’s Cellar)
Keith Beavers is a busy man. He’s a podcaster, wine educator, and tasting director for VinePair, one of the most widely read drinks publications in the world. He also hosts VinePair’s Wine 101 podcast, making the unnecessarily intimidating world of wine a little more approachable. Since Keith was last on the show, he’s been crisscrossing the country, exploring the ever-evolving American wine scene and releasing the first six episodes of The Great American Wine Tour, visiting a half-dozen iconic and emerging wineries along the way. This week, Keith sits down with Bart and Sam to talk about all of that, but let’s be clear, this visit was really about one thing: raiding Phil Coturri’s cellar. And Sam’s cellar, too. Because somehow, despite Keith’s vast experience tasting wines from around the world, he’d never really had the opportunity to dig into properly aged California wine. We decided it was time to fix that. We pull the corks on a few old bottles from Sonoma Valley and the Moon Moun

videoTennis Superstar Rafael Nadal Launches Limited Edition 'El Tenista' | The Week in Wine Podcast
Don has an Impressionist approach to his wines over the weekend but asks if Syrah/Shiraz is the GOAT (Greatest of all Time) grape variety. This week, we look at Australia's best wines and ask if Rutherglen Muscat should be on the shortlist. The US Supreme Court declines to rule on the Ohio interstate shipping case (so it's situation normal for the three-tier system there). The World's Best Sauvignon Blancs are still attraction attention, as is a piece on Generation Z being the best people to sell wines to...Generation Z. Olly also asks if Gewurztraminer is getting fair representation, generally, and Don wonders if there isn't a little snobbery when it comes to sweet wines. Beer judging - the inside story
Ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes at an international beer competition? From blind tastings to the challenges of selecting a medal-winning beer, experienced beer judge and Brewers Association American Craft Beer Ambassador for Europe Lotte Peplow takes us inside the judging room and shares what it takes to become a judge. What it’s like to judge beer At almost all competitions, beers are judged blind with the judging criteria based on how accurately a beer reflects the relevant style guidelines, produced by the Brewers Association, Beer Judge Certification Programme (BJCP) or the competition organiser. Judges are typically presented with a flight of 8-10 beers and assess each beer on the basis of visual appearance, aroma, taste/flavour, mouthfeel and aftertaste according to the style guidelines. Judges will often include an element of overall impression and sometimes drinkability or enjoyment of the beer. Judging generally takes place in a large hall or room with rows

Sangarida, Bierzo, Spain
While in Galicia recently to attend the 25th anniversary of Bodegas Attis, I had the chance to taste the wines from their DO Bierzo project, Sangarida. Attis was the original winery founded by the family of Robustiano Fariña but his wife, Laura Vázquez, is originally from the Bierzo region on the other side of Galicia and thus they set about creating a project on her home turf back in 2019. Despite several reports on Bierzo, this is the first time I’ve tasted the wines as they don’t actually have a […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription .
