Jericho Bracken Vineyard Shiraz 2024
A fair chunk of oak plays its hand with this Jericho Bracken Vineyard Shiraz. I wasn't overly surprised to learn after tasting and compiling this review that this sees 60% new French oak for 14 months. That high percentage is telling, particularly with a rampant coconut oak note. Some menthol gets in on the aroma profile too and refuses to budge. Hmm. Dark plums, blackberries, cherry liqueur, cola, stripped bark and black tea add plenty of character, but it's hard to shake the oak. Travellers Key Keg 20L Vermentino 2025
Bright and fresh with a neat textural feel, these Travellers 20L Key Kegs are a good on-premise solution to keep wines fresh as well as minimising packaging. A most enjoyable wine, this Vermentino is bursting with lemons, old-school lemonade, sea spray and a dash of saltiness. Made with a splash of Chardonnay and Fiano (2% each), there is a fine veil of minerality which adds further detail and elevates this expression, to mention the respectable length. Gilberts Wines Estate Chardonnay 2025
From Mount Barker comes this barrel-fermented Chardonnay from Gilberts Wines. A curious thing that caught my attention was the scents of wet brown paper and a musty note. Odd... Tinned pineapple, bruised golden apple and firm green tea-like phenolics are the driving forces. The palate is clipped and doesn't reach as much as hoped. Drinking: why are we in denial about the fun bit?
Picture by Mauricio Mascaro I was recently on the hunt for some good drinking anecdotes. My tasting events are built around a broader narrative from alcohol history, but without amusing tales and trivia, they’d be a bit dry for an audience getting steadily merry. So I googled "drinking stories". A bit vague, sure, but sometimes casting the net wide brings in a good catch.* It might not surprise you as much as it did me, but entertaining tales of mischief were not what the internet bestowed upon me. Nope. Instead, I found tales of woe, recovery, trauma, shame, and abuse - towards the self and others. In previous essays, I’ve explored the historically precedented conditions that have led us to a point where hedonism has become unfashionable. But I’m not interested today in the socio-economic reasons behind the decline in alcohol consumption. I want to talk about the attitude shift.
