Whiskey Review: Barrell New Year 2025 Bourbon
Introduction Today, we’re joined by our friend Lee Diaz from ReserveBar to dive into Barrell New Year 2025, the latest iteration of Barrell’s annual celebratory bourbon blend. If you’ve followed the podcast for a while, you know that Barrell has long been one of our favorite whiskey blenders, and their New Year releases always showcase their expert blending skills. This year’s batch clocks in at 112.1 proof and includes a mind-blowing 18 different whiskeys from eight states . The final mash bill lands at 75% corn, 20% rye, 4% malted barley, and 1% wheat , officially making this a four-grain bourbon . With so many components in play, the big question is: did Barrell create something cohesive, or does this one get lost in the blend? All images courtesy of Thalita Mangin Photography When I first registered National Drinking with Chickens Day alllllllllll the way back in 2019, I didn’t really have any concrete plans for the concept other than I just personally found it incredibly amusing to have a national day. At the last minute, we threw together a party at our old house—it was nothing fancy or big, but it was ALAWT of fun. And right then and there, I knew I wanted to turn it into a public event. So that was the ol’ plan for 2020. Annnnnnnnnnnnnd then 2020. And a subsequent five years of really demanding life stuff that prevented us from doing anything more than social media celebrations. Why aren't more people drinking Mencía? Seriously. It's one of Spain's most fascinating red varieties, and Bierzo is one of Europe's great places to grow it. Yet mention Mencía to many wine drinkers and they hesitate. So we're trying again. And if there's ever been a bottle capable of converting somebody to Mencía, César Márquez's entry-level Bierzo might be it. The story begins before modern Bierzo became fashionable. In 1989, César began acquiring tiny parcels around the village of Valtuille de Arriba. At the time, many growers were replacing old Palomino vineyards with Mencía. Instead of simply ripping everything out and starting over, César recognized the value of the ancient vines already in the ground.

Muddle ¼ of apple and next two ingredients in a shaker. 2. Add next two ingredients and fill with ice. 3. Shake vigorously and strain into a rocks glass. 4. Garnish with mint sprig and remaining apple chunks.
