videoMastering Valencia Wine. Climate, Geography and Soils
Join me as I explore Valencia’s wine-growing landscape, from its Mediterranean coastline to its inland mountains and limestone-rich vineyard soils. In this Mastering Spain episode, I explain how geography, climate and elevation shape grape-growing conditions across the Valencian Community, covering Castellón, Valencia and Alicante. Using maps, I’ll take you through the contrast between coastal and inland conditions, including cooler nights at altitude, seasonal rainfall and the challenges of drought and heavy storms. We’ll also explore the Sistema Ibérico and Sistemas Béticos mountain ranges, the Júcar and Segura rivers, and the Albufera lagoon. To bring the vineyard geology to life, I share a short video with Toni Sarrión, winemaker at Bodega Mustiguillo. He demonstrates the layers in a calicata, or soil pit, as we look more closely at clay, marl and calcium carbonate. Whether you’re studying Spanish wine or simply want to understand the places behind the bottles, I hope this helps

Michter’s 10 Year Old Rye Whiskey Review (2026)
By Richard Thomas Rating: A- I put Michter’s 10 year Old Single Barrel Rye in the same class as expressions like W.L. Weller 12 Year Old, the famed “Baby Pappy,” in terms of being an annualized limited edition of a certain high, consistent quality, scarce availability and general price point. The market value for W.L. …

Review: Stitzel Reserve Bourbon 31 Years Old
In today’s bourbon market, some discerning collectors chase age. Others chase proof. And if I had to guess, the center of that Venn diagram is pretty big, such that very old and very high-abv bourbon will turn a lot of heads. In April 2026, spirits giant Diageo announced a whiskey with stats so eye-popping, I… The post Review: Stitzel Reserve Bourbon 31 Years Old appeared first on Drinkhacker: The Insider's Guide to Good Drinking .

Jarl, Citra Session Blonde, 3.8%, The Law, North Berwick
I’d been up the Law So refreshments in The Law were deemed suitable. A branded glass of Jarl Citra Session Blonde from Fyne Ales on tap was chosen. Pours a bright fresh looking golden colour. Suitably noses of soft citrusy notes with a touch of maltiness. Soft & smooth palate – not really giving much … Continue reading Jarl, Citra Session Blonde, 3.8%, The Law, North Berwick →

videoGrand Cru or Grand Poo? Keep Score at Home
Six bottles, three head-to-head pairs, one uncomfortable question: does the famous, prestigious label actually taste better than the humble entry-level bottle sitting underneath it? Prices run from $30 all the way to $199, every label is covered, and nobody at the table knows which glass is the trophy bottle and which is the weeknight pour. Each pair sticks to one grape and one style, so the expensive bottle has nowhere to hide. One flight gets pulled apart over oak handling and knife-edge acidity. The next nearly ends in a brawl, with one taster writing a wine off as "just stem and stem and nothing else" while the others call it the most smashable thing on the table. The last pair sets a producer's flagship against its own cheap sibling, same hands, same cellar, a fraction of the money. Pour something, lock in your guesses before the reveal, and find out whether your palate backs the price tag or the underdog. Subscribe for more blind tastings where the price tag gets no say. #win

Fall has settled itself here in New England and my mindset on wines and what dishes to cook have shifted . I’m looking for more of those warm me up reds and ho me style dishes . This week I’m featuring the Nero d’Avola grape from Cantina Colosi in Sicily with a delightful pairing . Come check it out! What is Nero d’Avola ? Nero d’Avola is a native grape of Sicily that is widely planted throughout the island and is one of t he Sicily’s top red grapes .
