podcast· 46:52· Ep 623Ep 623: Mount Etna, Sicily
Mount Etna is one of the most interesting wine regions of Italy. On the northeast coast of Sicily, wine grapes grow on the slopes of Europe's highest active volcano, which has been erupting for at least 500,000 years and ranks among the most active volcanoes in the world. The UN counts it among just 16 volcanoes worldwide that pose a high risk to life and property, and that's not a joke: ash, steam, and lava flows can and do threaten the vineyards, and the mountain has shaped the culture of Sicily itself. But regardless of this volcanic activity, vines have always been here. And viticulture has been around since the Greeks in 8 th century BCE. In this show I discuss the mountain, which locals call "Mongibello," the beautiful mountain. I talk about the history, the terroir, the grapes, the wines, food and producers, and take a small detour into the world of volcanology! All photos taken by Wine for Normal People A dork out show (and if you want more, check out the recorded class "Volcan

podcast· 49:49· Ep 557From Shiraz Overload to Rare Grapes: Matt Talbot's Bold Approach to Australian Wine
Aussi wines have a distinction. They are great for one, but have gone through some of the most volatile representation in the US of than any other region in the world. One decade they are everywhere, and the next, virtually non-existant. And right now, they are closer to non-existant than everywhere (though I do talk about a wine I saw on a list in Orance County, I had to buy it. Matt Talbot might claim he's "a little bit broken" from all the long-haul flights, but he's the kind of winemaker who never stops patching things up—with new grapes, wild ideas, and a dash of irreverence about the global wine game. Settle in with a glass, because this episode isn't your parents' Australian wine tasting. Paul K and Matt Talbot swirl all the major questions into the glass: why did Australian wine's star rise and fall (and rise again), how do you sell a grape that no one can spell, and what really happens when a "terrible variety" is planted just to see what climate change might do? As the conver
