EVERYDAY WINE SEXISM. Part 1 with La Tournelle

With our constant filming of winemakers we decided to start a new series, asking female winemakers if they can recall experiences of everyday sexism in the wine world. We have filmed quite a few and today we premiere our first clip with wonderful Jura winemaker Evelyne of La Tournelle (Formally known as Domaine de la Tournelle). She recounts an experience at a tasting that highlights just one experience of everyday sexism in the wine world. This is an important topic in the male-dominated wine world, and it needs to stop. An incredible visit to CLOS BATEAU in Beaujolais!

Clos Bateau is a wine estate by Thierry and Sylvie Klok de Visser, who in 2019 left the restaurant scene in Amsterdam to pursue their dream of winemaking, in Beaujolais. They tend to 4-5 hectares of vineyards in Lantignié, a prized village just north of Lyon that many state should be the 11th Cru of Beaujolais! Their vineyards are occupied by old-vine Gamay (at least 50 years) and a small amount of younger Chardonnay, tucked away in a tree-lined parcel with it's own microclimate. The dynamic duo behind Clos Bateau let the moon cycles lead their winemaking decisions including in the cellar, such as when to press, bottle, and how long to macerate. Only indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation and no filtering or fining agents are used and no added sulphites - basically, as little intervention as possible. Due to the low yields, production is very limited - they only make about 1100 cases each vintage, some limited to just 700 bottles of so. The wines however have already been very

We visited natural winemaker Andi Weigand to make our own custom collaboration bottle "Forever Young", a refreshing Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Muskateller blend we made together in the cellar. We were also there to capture his ethos and winemaking style on camera, however, on arrival it became clear the focus of the video should be to capture the energy Andi creates with the people around him, and with one clear binding element alongside the wine? MUSIC Here, music intertwines in every aspect of the harvest and Andi firmly believes if the harvest team has a good vibe, this translates into the wine. Therefore, ensuring there is a good vibe with great music all the time is essential to make his wines great. We love that.
