A Really Good Year
2024 has been my most successful and my most prolific year as a freelancer. In fact it’s the most I’ve earned since 2018, when I was still on the editorial staff at Good Beer Hunting . Coincidentally, I’ve also turned in more work this year than in those previous—96 commissions and counting, beating my previous best of 83. Don’t get me wrong it’s not big money, but I’ve worked hard for that extra cheddar this year. More importantly than anything it's a living I cherish. I’ve also broken what I consider to be the awards hoodoo that caused me so much unnecessary stress in the past. My book, Manchester’s Best Beer Pubs and Bars picked up three awards—two silvers from the British Guild of Beer Writers and a gold from the North American Guild of Beer writers. I also picked up a further three nominations for my feature writing, and Pellicle , the crown jewel in my professional life, attained several more. Most significantly among these was a nomination for magazine of the year from the Briti

12/31/24: Tales from the Cellar NYE Edition--Braxton Brewing Company's Dark Charge CInnamon Roll (2020)
Dry January begins tomorrow, so this beer is my last hurrah for a month. Given that, I thought I'd break out something special. Yesterday, I ventured deep into my cellar to see what I could find. Now, let's explore this aged stout together. I'm saying my goodbyes to 2024 with Braxton's Dark Charge Cinnamon Roll. This came as the second of three bottles in the Dark Charge Breakfast Box (I have the other two stashed away for who knows when). My bottle is number 49/1000. Grab yourself a beer and let's bid farewell to this year together and in style. Braxton's headquartered in Covington, KY (that HQ is now one of five Braxton locations across the Greater Cincinnati region). Their "Our Story" page details their early history. It started with Evan Rouse, who began brewing in his parents' garage when he was just sixteen. Since then, he's doggedly pursued his dream and now what he started has spiraled into one of area's most prestigious breweries. Dark Charge Cinnamon Roll doesn't have a

12/29/24: Tröegs Independent Brewing's The Mad Elf Grand Cru, a Late Christmas Post
It's Christmas! Okay, it's after Christmas. My week didn't go quite as planned but that's fine. I spent more time with my family, which means I had more fun than I'd anticipated. How was your Christmas? Did Santa bring you what you wanted? Or, was your stocking filled with coal and fish heads? I'm here at home now after a whirlwind near-week away. My tree's lit and I'm bundled up and snuggled under a blanket. Today's beer marks the end of the holiday season for me. So, with a grateful prayer and a thankful heart let's to it: Tröegs' The Mad Elf Grand Cru. Tröegs is the creation of brothers John and Chris Trogner. They both found a love of brewing in Colorado and brought it home to Central Pennsylvania with them. They opened their brewery in 1997 and have been brewing (and expanding) since. Here's their "Our Story" page if you want all of the details I skipped over here (there're plenty of them!). The Mad Elf Grand Cru is a souped up version of The Mad Elf . This 11% ABV bruiser of an a

December bottles
Dhillon Riesling 2024. A Bindi wine using non estate Macedon fruit from the Glenhope vineyard. The back label mentions - interesting grapes from interesting vineyards for, hopefully, interesting people. . . Wild yeast, old barrels, time of lees. A quieter than expected nose, pear as much as citrus, green bean. Different from the usual Oz Riesling - as well as the feel of pebbles and the taste of apricots - there’s more flesh and creaminess in the mouth . The Clare Valley 2021 Jim Barry ‘The Florita’ is much more typical - bath salts, a puff of lime; bone dry, phenolic ++, a slightly salty edge . Kumeu River Mate’s Vineyard Chardonnay 2022. 13%. Quite above and apart from most. A complex and compelling nose - pear and citrus, white florals, a hint of spice (ginger and soft oak), subtle layers. . . Rich and refined and long in the mouth - it’s tight, intense, pulsing with phenolic grip and citrus pith. . . I wrote - cf orange wine, but clean. . . Which is to say - the t

On vinegar
Almost 20 years of tinkering with my home based vinegar solera. . . The oldest bottle - 4th from the left - the green glassed Stella Bella, has taken a turn, and gone from being sharp and clean to rusty and dull. . . Not bad given it was originally inoculated in January 2005. I spent a few hours sorting through my bottles - decanting some for the pantry, adding left over natural wine where needed and disposing of the dud and tainted batches. I ended up disposing about 20 bottles (a half of my solera). . . The biggest cull I can recall. . . The happy vinegar bottles (average age 10 years) had clear, orange tinted contents, there was almost no need to smell and taste the liquid to confirm their health. In contrast - the tainted bottles, or the ones which never got started remained deeper in colour or cloudy in some cases. A spectrum of nutty and munted, all the way to fetid. Learnings : 1. Red wine vinegars are much easier to make. 2. Start with a natural wine wit
