Carrick Organic Bannockburn Pinot Blanc 2025
Carrick Organic Bannockburn Pinot Blanc 2025 $42 Alsace in France is the spiritual home of Pinot Blanc (a mutation of Pinot Noir), yet it’s clearly loving the schistous soils of Central Otago. I did want to write ‘schisty’ – but stupid grammarly wouldn’t let me. Sigh. Anyhoo, Carrick’s Pinot Blanc style leans into the deeply […]

A Visit To The Borders Distillery, Hawick
The Borders area of Scotland isn’t renowned for whisky distillation – although there are now a few on the go. Nor does it have the caché of Speyside. But as I was in the environs I thought a visit to The Borders Distillery in Hawick was overdue. Unlike other distilleries, Borders released a Workshop Series … Continue reading A Visit To The Borders Distillery, Hawick →

Echolands
Here are the outstanding new wines by Echolands. Today we share the wines founded by Doug Frost MW. Frost is remarkably one of three individuals in the world to hold simultaneously the Master of Wine and Master Sommelier titles, achieving his MS in 1991 and MW in 1993. He also authored ‘The Spanish Wine Guide (third edition 2009’) and is a contributing editor of the Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails. I loved the wines made by Brian Rudin when he was at Canvasback. He has wines that captivate the senses with a beginning, middle and an end with a great focus on texture. These were wines that beautifully personified Red Mountain. The wines are getting better and better. This is a fun, playful, yet very serious lineup. The wines are made with a ton of intention and background. I love the 2025 Echolands Rose of Grenache (OB, 92) which is very pretty and nuanced, with outstanding flavor range. Pineau des Charentes (Malternative Belgium / C Dully)
Pineau des Charentes is a blend of grape must with grape distillate – typically Cognac eau-de-vie. The cognac part prevents further fermentation and must be between 60% and 72%. This blend is then aged in casks for a number of years. After 5 years in barrel it can be called Vieux Pineau and after 10 years it becomes Très Vieux Pineau. However in this session we'll try a few that far exceed these categories.A big part of this session will consist of Malternative Belgium releases. Apart from their cognac releases they've already bottled an impressive series of Pineau. Somehow we never found the time to publish the reviews.
