Who asked for this?
They've gone all creative at Open Gate for the summer, Lord save us. Classic styles can wait; everything is getting an off kilter ingredient or two. But we shouldn't be too cynical before starting to drink them. Exhibit A is Cola Radler . It looks like stout: a dark reddish brown with a fine white head. Cola sits in the middle of the flavour, tasting a little concentrated, conjuring long-dormant sensory memories of the Soda Stream machine in my childhood kitchen. The cola syrup had a particular smell and taste which is echoed here. And that's it. As we saw on Friday , radler is supposed to be quenching and refreshing, and although this is only 3.5% ABV, the lack of citrus means it doesn't work. The cola is overly sticky and clashes unpleasantly with the stout's bitterness and roast. I noticed towards the end a nearby menu board saying that there is lime in the mix h

The paradox of hospitality: valued outside, undervalued within
In Italian wineries, hospitality is still treated as a second-tier role, even by colleagues. Until relational and positioning work is seen as equal to production, hospitality will remain a half-realized investment. Beer In Ads #5262: Absolutely Pure Daufer’s Celebrated Bock Beer
Two years ago I decided to concentrate on Bock ads for awhile. Bock, of course, may have originated in Germany, in the town of Einbeck. Because many 19th century American breweries were founded by German immigrants, they offered a bock at certain times of the year, be it Spring, Easter, Lent, Christmas, or what have […]

World’s Best Infused Spirits According to the 2026 High Spirits Awards
By Mike Gorman, The Best Drink Ever Presented by L.A. Spirits Awards Published June 07, 2026 These Infused Beverages Cut Through the Noise. Here’s What Made the List. The infused beverage category is growing fast. Faster than consumers and retailers can keep up with. Every month brings another wave of THC seltzers, infused cocktails, cannabis sodas, spirit alternatives, and functional drinks all promising a better buzz, cleaner experience, or smarter way to unwind. Some deliver. A lot don’t. That’s where blind judging matters. At the High Spirits Awards, products are evaluated without branding, packaging, marketing copy, or hype entering the equation. Our judges — including beverage buyers, bartenders, operators, educators, and industry professionals — focus on what actually matters: balance, flavor, aroma, structure, drinkability, and overall execution. No marketing. No politics. Just what’s in the glass…or can. This year’s High Spirits Awards showed how quickly this category is evolv
