Why are horse brasses a pub thing?
Ask someone to describe the décor of a traditional pub and they might well mention horse brasses. Horse brasses are yellow-metal plates or plaques originally used to decorate horse harnesses. In pubs, they’re often nailed to the wall or displayed on black leather straps known as ‘martingales’. But why have they historically been a go-to […] Why are horse brasses a pub thing? originally posted at Boak & Bailey's Beer Blog

From the Cellar with @Sam_WineTeacher
In addition to the weekly wine review and the various other, usually wine-related, articles I write for My Van City, I am going to include a new one that will appear from time to time. I’m calling it ‘From the Cellar’. It will be similar to the wine reviews, except that it will feature wines ... Read more The post From the Cellar with @Sam_WineTeacher first appeared on My VanCity .

Everything You Know About Don Papa Is a Lie: The Secret Bottle Swap
If you have been wandering down the spirits aisle for the last few years you have watched a masterclass in corporate gaslighting. The bottle is instantly familiar. It is heavy when you pick if off the shelf and it features that lush and overly curated Sugarlandia packaging. It looks like a Steampunk nightmare. It is... Roy Rogers Drink
The Roy Rogers drink is a refreshing classic mocktail. If you have ever loved a Shirley Temple, you will love this recipe. Similar to the Shirley Temple it’s simply a lot more fun to order a drink named after a famous actor than a basic cola with grenadine. Roy Rogers, known as King of the Cowboys,…

Review: Michter’s US-1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash Whiskey 2026
Michter’s launched its first barrel strength product, Barrel Strength Rye, in 2015 and followed it up not long after with a barrel strength offering of their core US-1 Bourbon. While both Barrel Strength expressions have reappeared over the years (the rye more frequently than the bourbon), Michter’s Toasted series has been the more consistent, non… The post Review: Michter’s US-1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash Whiskey 2026 appeared first on Drinkhacker: The Insider's Guide to Good Drinking .

Oak & Mirrors Imperial Porter which- Brehon x Two Stacks
[Beer Review] I cracked open the Oak & Mirrors Whiskey Cask Aged Imperial Porter which is a collaboration between @brehon_brewhouse and @twostackswhiskey earlier than planned. I’d meant to save it for later in the week but Scotland were doing their level best to send my blood pressure into orbit. They scraped past Haiti 1-0 in […]

Old Age
I seem to be caught in a plethora of medical appointments at the moment. Apart from the ongoing saga of my stomach and the recent dental work which requires follow-up, I had made an appointment with my usual dentist for an annual check-up in July. However, I have been experiencing palpitations during the night, so an ECG was called for and now a follow-up with the GP to discuss what they have found. I also have an upcoming appointment with my consultant gastroenterologist in a couple of weeks. It seems my diary is full of appointments. Getting old sucks. I've not been firing on all cylinders and have suspended my gym membership for the month of July to have a bit of a restful few weeks. I hope to be back to my normal self by August. I had to laugh the other day. I was doing a shift on the till at the foodbank charity shop and was chatting to the Assistant Manageress. She told me her cat is 16 and has dementia. She said it wanders round in the night miaowing, presumably beca

Thistly Cross, Elderflower Scottish Cider, 3.4%
There’s a number of flavoured ciders on the market. They use additional fruits or flowers as well as the apple base to give a different taste profile.
