Where the Towers Meet the Vines: Panizzi Vernaccia di San Gimignano
Vernaccia di San Gimignano was one of my first white wines of Italy that I came to enjoy . It also was Italy‘ s first DOC in 1966 an d is stil l Tu scany’s only white wine with the DOCG designation . Let’s take a look at this quaint Tus can town and the Panizz i winery, which is the focus of today’s tasting. All About San Gimignano I find It's easier to relate to something when you have visited the area from which something originates from . I have always loved the medieval tower driven, walled town of San Gimignano set in the Siena province of northwest Tuscany . It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site with its 14 medieval towers that still remain that were once built by 13 th century rival noble families where height ruled . It’s such a great town to explore whether you stay over or make it one of your stops while you’re touring the Tuscan countryside . Just make sure to sit back and have a glass of their Vernaccia

Bolgheri Refined: The Contemporary Precision of Argentiera
The Wining Hour: In a region celebrated for powerful Super Tuscans and internationally acclaimed Bordeaux blends, Tenuta Argentiera has quietly forged a distinctive identity of its own. Situated at the southern edge of Bolgheri, the estate has become synonymous with a style that marries depth and concentration with remarkable precision and elegance. It is a house that captures the modern spirit of Bolgheri, as wines are shaped not by excess, but by balance, detail, and a profound sense of place. I recently joined a virtual tasting hosted by Argentiera and led by winemaker Nicolò Carrara, gaining deeper insight into the winery’s philosophy while sampling the newest vintages. Since its establishment and subsequent development in the early 2000s, Argentiera has focused on expressing terroir through meticulous viticulture and minimal intervention. In fact, this is Bolgheri through a contemporary lens: wines that speak eloquently of their coastal origins while maintaining a polished, sophis

Returning to Casanova di Neri-A Renewed Look at One of Montalcino’s Defining Estates
The Wining Hour: Some wineries leave a lasting impression long after the final sip. Casanova di Neri is one of them, as this producer has helped define the modern identity of Brunello while preserving its deep cultural roots. I first visited the estate nearly 10 years ago, and while the wines were memorable, it was the setting itself that lingered in my mind—a landscape of rolling hills, vineyards stretching toward the horizon, and a palpable sense of purpose. Returning recently, I found much had changed and yet everything felt remarkably familiar. Since it was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, the estate remains deeply rooted in the same vision that has guided it —to express the unique character of Montalcino through exceptional Sangiovese. Located on the eastern side of Montalcino in southern Tuscany, Casanova di Neri occupies a privileged position among some of the region’s most distinctive vineyard sites. Over the decades, the Neri family has assembled a collection of vineyards tha

The Perfect Dip: Vin Santo & Cantucci
Vin Santo, translating to “holy wine ”, is Tuscany’s beloved dessert wine . It’s a wine that takes patience throughout it s lengthy production and aging process . It's not completely known as to how this wine got its name . One assumption is that it was always a wine pressed during Holy Week and another assumption is that it was a wine used for religious purposes . Regardless of its origin, its unique process and limited production make this a special wine worth seeking out to experience. I had been sitting on some wine notes from a Vin Santo I tasted years back from Montefioralle that I apparently had never shared . Since Vino Travels celebrates its 13th anniversary this month and sadly I’ve never written about Vin Santo in all these years, I figured there is no better time like the present . What is Vin Santo? Vin Santo is a dessert wines that is traditionally known for its production in Tuscany . It can be made in

Aia Vecchia: A Modern Voice Defining Coastal Tuscany
The Wining Hour: Founded by the Pellegrini family in the mid-1990’s, Aia Vecchia is a family-owned Tuscan estate that has a strong reputation for producing expressive, terroir-driven wines from Italy’s coastal regions. Today, Aia Vecchia is managed by Elia Pellegrini, 4th generation owner and vintner. The estate takes its name from an old building on their property, symbolizing both heritage and place. With roughly 112 acres of vineyards split between Bolgheri and Maremma, the estate honors the region’s deep agricultural tradition with a modern, detail-focused approach to viticulture and winemaking, while capturing the essence of Tuscany’s maritime landscapes. Along with Aia Vecchia’s agronomist, Daniel Schuster, and the expertise of Hungarian winemaker, Tibor Gal, the Pellegrinis have been crafting beautiful, structured Bordeaux grape varieties primarily in two Tuscan zones: Bolgheri and Maremma. Brunello with Soul: Patrizia Cencioni’s Iconic Wines from Montalcino
The Wining Hour: At this year’s Benvenuto Brunello event, I had the opportunity to taste the highly anticipated 2021 vintage ahead of its official release—an early glimpse into what is already being discussed as a remarkable year for Montalcino. Among the many compelling wines, reconnecting with the portfolio of Azienda Agricola Patrizia Cencioni felt particularly meaningful, especially the standout Ofelio Brunello di Montalcino, which once again commanded attention for its depth and composure. Having visited the estate some time ago, I realized I never fully shared that experience. This recent tasting served as the perfect catalyst to revisit the winery’s story and finally bring that long-overdue reflection to light. Visiting Patrizia Cencioni When I visited the Azienda Agricola Patrizia Cencioni estate in southeastern Montalcino, I learned about a family story that is deeply intertwined with the history of Brunello itself. Though she officially founded her estate in 1989, her roots i

A Classic Tuscan Pairing: Castello di Brolio Chianti Classico Riserva with Ribollita
Le Mie Cose Preferite , "my favorite things", is the theme of this month's Italian Food, Wine & Tasting group hosted by Camilla . The focus this month is to highlight our favorite Italian wines, along with a pairing or travel tale. Picking a favorite Italian wine is not an easy task for someone like myself . I honestly have so many favorites ! When my hand is twisted, though, I must turn to one of my favorite grapes, Sangiovese. This is a grape produced throughout many of Italy's wine regions, mostly central Italy, but it finds it s true home in the region of Tuscany. Sangiovese throughout Italy With that, Tuscany holds a special place in my heart as it's where I first came to fall in love with the country many moons ago when studying abroad in college. It was a life-changing experience for me, and although I didn't enjoy wine at that time, I have truly come to appreciate the Sangiovese grape and its many

The Silver Lining of Bolgheri: The Wines of Tenuta Argentiera
In the heart of southern Tuscany is one of o ne of Italy and Tuscany’s prestigious wine regions, Bolgheri . Wine lovers may be most familiar with this territory for the innovate “Super Tuscan” reds that hit the scene in the late 20 th century. I was introduced to these wines via a virtual tasting hosted by Argentiera and Studio Cru and led by Argentiera’s winemaker, Nicoló Carrara, whom has been their winemaker wince 2009. Nicoló Carrara In this article I feature the wines of Argentiera , a winery that takes pride in its distinctive reds made from Bordeaux grapes such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot . Where is Bolgheri ? Bolgheri sits in the southwestern part of Tuscany covering over 3,700 acres of land . The area is in the shape of an amphitheater that hugs the Tuscan coastline for 8 miles . Moris Farms: Exploring the Maremma and Morellino di Scansano
You may be most familiar with the Sangiovese from Tuscany used in the esteemed Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines, but what about Sangiovese from southern Tuscany? If you’re a lover of Sangiovese like I am, than the Maremma of southern Tusca ny is a must try and visit. Where is the Maremma ? The Maremma is located in the southwestern part of Tuscany in the province of Grosseto . If yo u’re a lover of unspoiled beauty and nature , the Maremma covers a vast landscape with an abundance of forests and hills . If it also filled with a sunshine drenched coastline for those that adore the beaches and relaxation in the sun.
