Multimillion-Dollar Winery Built By Wine Icons Produces Elegant Spanish Red Wine
Nothing seemed more tranquil than driving through the Rioja wine region in north-central Spain, passing lovely bodegas (wineries) and vineyard after vineyard of low-lying old bush vines with their thick trunks and gnarly arms having only a handful of Tempranillo … Continue reading → The post Multimillion-Dollar Winery Built By Wine Icons Produces Elegant Spanish Red Wine appeared first on Dame Wine .

Viña Vilano, Ribera del Duero, Spain
This serves as an update to the previous tasting of Viña Vilano, except this time it’s all from Ribera del Duero with the exception of the Godello wine from Bierzo–this same vintage was tasted last year, and, thankfully, was scored the same. What’s interesting to see overall in their wines it that, despite being founded in 1957, there are constant changes to the wines. The biggest to note in all in these latest wines is the strength of the 2022 vintage which is, excellent across the board. Both of their […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription .

Cael's Gate Samuel Tempranillo 2025
From the Broke Fordwich subregion of the Hunter Valley, this Tempranillo from Cael's Gate arrives with plenty of intent. Blackberry fruit and blackberry liqueur notes sit at the core, but it's the oak that protrudes powerfully from the glass and blankets much of the fruit. As a result, the palate is firm and uncompromising. Powdery tannins are scattered across the palate, bringing a drying, puckering mouthfeel that tightens its grip with every sip. There’s no shortage of structure or conviction, but this is a wine that powers along like a bulldozer, flattening subtlety and leaving little room for charm to emerge. For me, Tempranillo is at its best when it balances savoury detail with juicy fruit, vitality and an easy rapport with food. This takes a different path. It dominates in a somewhat brutish fashion, commanding attention rather than inviting it. There’s certainly muscle here, but it doesn’t engage or embrace quite as much as hoped. 83/100 Region: Hunter Valley RRP:&

Baigorri – Negu 2025
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise: there’s strength in young wine. Sure, when it comes to investing or being ‘fancy’, everyone iswas more than happy shell out good money for long-aged wines such as in Bordeaux, but even when these were the cat’s loudest meow, they were always a small portion of the wine being consumed. In fact, all of these wines with five years or more of aging make up something like 1% of the total wine market. The actual truth is that more than 90% of all wine […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription.

Vin Sol Ignis Tempranillo 2024
We've got a smart McLaren Vale Tempranillo here courtesy of Vin Sol. Admittedly, it looked better after it had some time to breathe, so give it that chance to shine. An array of dark berry fruits greets you, but I'm all here for the cola, cured meats and blackberry jubes. Dried herbs add detail with a sheet of fine exotic spices, but you'll see it move into fifth gear beside tomato-based pizza and pasta dishes. A big thumbs up from me. 91/100 Region: McLaren Vale RRP: $27 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Alba en Ribera, Ribera del Duero
These are part of a new project called, Alba en Ribera in DO Ribera del Duero. Both of the wines present a lighter take on the more typical heavier-bodied wines found in the region which makes them drift a touch more towards Rioja stylistically, although with plenty of dark fruit notes to state firmly that they are indeed Ribera wines. From the village of Olmedillo, the vineyards are all higher-altitude plantings starting at 825m and going up from there. From the start everything has been farmed organically, but don’t be […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription .

Bridgetown Winery Redtale 2024
This Bridgetown Winery Redtale is a great drink that screams for yiros, burgers and anything in between. Give it some time to breathe and the attractive aromatic lift will whisk you away. A blend of Barbera, Tempranillo and Shiraz (40/40/20), all parcels were co-fermented. I love the vibrancy of the red and purple berries and the structure the Shiraz brings to tie it together. Some cola, dark chocolate, puffs of earthiness and pan juices all put their shoulder to the wheel. Woodsy spices, a touch of five spice and some fruit bun spices elevate its appeal on close. It's a terrific drink and one that I would enthusiastically recommend. 92/100 Region: Blackwood Valley RRP: $30 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Nannup Estate Firetower SMT 2022
I recently received a few wines from the Blackwood Valley's Nannup Estate as I explore the district from the comfort of my east coast abode. Two wines down from this producer and they've delivered two rippers. This Shiraz Malbec Tempranillo nails the brief for great drinking. No information was received about the percentages in the blend, but that almost seems irrelevant when the going is good and the delish factor is high. Crushed purple petals set the tone. It's a wine with a rustic presence but polished with bevelled edges. Plums, mulberries and blueberries offer plenty of interest and depth with black earth and a notable minerally vibe. A faint eucalyptus note raises its hand with a neat dusting of dark chocolate crumb. Tense tannins soften over a couple of days. Built for food, it will take down some robust protein with ease. A terrific blend and rock-solid example of pleasure all for 28 bucks. 92/100 Region: Blackwood Valley RRP: $28 Source: Sample Winery

St Johns Wine Round Puzzle SGT 2022
I read "Shiraz Grenache Tempranillo" on the label, and all I can think of is burgers and pizza. Load up. From the Blackwood Valley region, just inland from Western Australia's Margaret River, this is a 57/22/21 blend. Dense fruit and mouth-filling tannins describe this wine best - armed and ready for those casualmeals. Blackberries and plums are plentiful. Tense through the core with puffs of earth, an array of dried herbs and a slight oak influence, puckering tannins leave their mark, adding some chew. Best enjoyed in the medium term, match with food and some footy on the TV for the win. 90/100 Region: Blackwood Valley RRP: $40 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Campo Viejo Tempranillo for Sipping and Socializing
We’re returning to Spain’s Rioja wine region again for another sip of Tempranillo. This time the wine is 100% Tempranillo, once again made by Campo Viejo. Both are easier to make than sangria, not as boozy and perfect for a […] The post Campo Viejo Tempranillo for Sipping and Socializing appeared first on Pull That Cork .

Bodega Severino Sanz, Ribera del Duero
While I’ve previously tasted the wines of Severino Sanz, it was ages ago and this new tasting formed a rediscovery of their wines for me and a greater appreciation for their work. For those who know this other side to Tempranillo in Spain, you’ll be very aware that it’s a very different take on the variety with wines that are much more dark fruited and denser in concentration. Additionally, they can often be very pricey in my opinion. This isn’t the case here with this selection of wines which I […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription .
