Only two years ago Sonoma-based Graton Distillery released Redwood Empire, a blend of its own microdistilled spirit and sourced whiskey. Now the brand is back with not one, not two, but three new expressions which collectively replace the 2018 release. Here’s all the details to get you started. Purple Wine + Spirits today announced its… The post Review: Redwood Empire Pipe Dream, Emerald Giant, and Lost Monarch (Updated 2026) appeared first on Drinkhacker: The Insider's Guide to Good Drinking .

A Delayed Belfast Whiskey Week Clyde May’s Blind Tasting, 42.4% to 47%,
Ever since the Orange Ogre became POTUS & politicised whiskey with his trade tariffs I’ve not been inclined to purchase any American Whiskey. Clearing out the garage recently however I came across a few unopened samples of Clyde May’s Whiskey from a Belfast Whiskey Week taster pack. That dates the samples back to COVID times … Continue reading A Delayed Belfast Whiskey Week Clyde May’s Blind Tasting, 42.4% to 47%, →

Review: Old Overholt Straight Rye Whiskey 4 Years Old (2022)
For such a humble brand, Old Overholt Rye has undergone an awfully large number of reinventions over the last decade, including a full relaunch with proof change only 2 years ago, a bonded expression, and an overproof version. Now standard-issue Old Overholt is changing once again, keeping the new 43% abv but adding a 4… The post Review: Old Overholt Straight Rye Whiskey 4 Years Old (2022) appeared first on Drinkhacker: The Insider's Guide to Good Drinking .

Buffalo Trace Resurfaces 5 Iconic Whiskey Brands With Newest Prohibition Collection
Buffalo Trace Distillery is resurfacing five historic American whiskey brands for the third installment of its Prohibition Collection. This year’s edition features a lineup of five distinct whiskeys, including a high-proof rye, an uncut bourbon, and a blended whiskey, each representing a now-defunct brand that operated during Prohibition. The five whiskeys represent brands — Cove Spring, Henry Watterson, John G. Carlisle, Kentucky River, and Walter B. Duffy — produced under the direction of Albert B. Blanton at the George T. Stagg Distillery, which was granted one of six federal licenses to legally produce whiskey for medicinal purposes during Prohibition. Review: Copper & Cask “Wave That Flag” Bourbon and “Boston Rum Party” Rye
In 2026, consumers have been inundated with American whiskey releases bearing America 250 branding in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. For many producers, the formula has been fairly predictable: add an America 250 logo to the label, reference “1776-2026,” and attach a patriotic name. Numerous releases also direct… The post Review: Copper & Cask “Wave That Flag” Bourbon and “Boston Rum Party” Rye appeared first on Drinkhacker: The Insider's Guide to Good Drinking .

Review: Old Stubborn Cask Strength Rye, Old Swagger Cask Strength Rye, and Old Swagger Bourbon
There are plenty of people in the industry who can make whiskey. Far fewer have built a reputation on their ability to recognize exceptional whiskey when it reaches the glass. For years, Ed Bley earned the respect of enthusiasts not as a distiller, but as a selector. Through countless single barrels and private picks, he… The post Review: Old Stubborn Cask Strength Rye, Old Swagger Cask Strength Rye, and Old Swagger Bourbon appeared first on Drinkhacker: The Insider's Guide to Good Drinking .

Last year Old Forester began releasing its President’s Choice whiskeys to retail for the first time, at least on a limited basis. Koopers Family Barrel Reserve Rye
I’d like to thank the Texas Whiskey Festival, Koopers Whiskey, and their PR partners for providing this sample with no strings attached. Bonus post time again! We’ll probably be having these for a while as I work through a massive sample backlog. Tonight’s is another winner from the Texas Whiskey Festival, this time the winner of the Rye — Must-Try Bottles category. Koopers Family Barrel Reserve Rye is a mixture of four- and seven-year-old rye whiskeys that are then put into used bourbon barrels for finishing. Before bottling, toasted oak staves are added to those barrels as a final step. It is bottled at barrel proof and is available on the Koopers Whiskey website for $65 per bottle. Let’s see how it tastes. Koopers Family Barrel Reserve Rye Purchase Info: This sample was provided at no charge for review purposes. Just across the Brooklyn Bridge in a former Navy Yard is a small craft distillery called King’s County, the first in NYC since prohibition. Frey Ranch Farm Strength Uncut Rye
I’d like to thank the folks at Frey Ranch Distillery and their PR team for providing this bottle with no strings attached. Now, I don’t know about you, but I seldom think of farming and Nevada in the same sentence. Mostly because I’ve really only been to the areas that tourists go to. I’ve been to Vegas, visited nature in the area, and driven through Northern Nevada on I-80 a couple of times. And honestly, I never thought about grain farming as I drove through. But apparently I should have. Just over the southern horizon (poetically speaking) from I-80 lives a small town named Fallon. And when you look for Fallon on a satellite view, you notice one thing quite clearly: there is a lot of green on that image. More than my brief visits to the state would have ever led me to believe. I must not be the only one with those thoughts, as the press release spends a few words explaining just that: Using his own slow-grown grains that take Northern Nevada’s climate, topography, and terroir into a

Review: Angel’s Envy Cask Strength Rye 10 Years Old (2026)
