Exploring Beaumes-de-Venise (1) introducing this interesting Rhône Cru
Beaumes-de-Venise is a small but interesting Cru in the southern Rhône. Initially, it was made a cru for its sweet

Famille Quiot, Southern France
Accompanying this article is a small portfolio tasting of the wines from Famille Quiot, a family that lays claim to a winemaking history since the mid-18th century. I say ‘small’ as the parent company seems to have more than a dozen individual wineries and brands residing under it. The key item uniting all of them however is that they’re firmly Southern Rhône in origin. For example, there are at least six different Provençal-style rosés, of which I tasted half of them and yes, there is indeed a difference between them […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription .

Two French Red Blends: Chateau Daviaud and M. Chapoutier Belleruche_PR SAMPLE
I recently decided to review two French red wines that are blends. Blends have the benefit that two or more grape varieties together fill in the weakness of the other grape. For example, one grape may be fruity but lack tannins, while another grape has plenty of tannins but lacks much fruit character. Putting the two grape varieties together makes...

98pt Thorne & Daughters Rocking Horse 2024 – a triumph
Thorne & Daughters’ Rocking Horse is the ‘poster child for new-wave white blends’. It’s been a top performer for more than a decade, and the 98-point 2024 is ‘a wine of presence’, says Christian Eedes. Taking its aesthetic from white Burgundy, rather than the Rhône, this multi-variety blend offers immense value at R370. In 2025, the Cat’s Cradle sees the inclusion […] The post 98pt Thorne & Daughters Rocking Horse 2024 – a triumph appeared first on Wine Cellar Plus .

April Wine Reviews: from Vin de France to Grand Tasting
A whirlwind month that changed my life – in more ways that one. Contrary to popular belief, I am somewhat ashamed to admit that I actually haven’t visited every single French wine region (yet). I’ve done Champagne, Loire, Bordeaux, Provence, Bourgogne / Beaujolais, and Alsace, but have yet to hit Jura, Savoie, Corsica, Languedoc – […]

Domaine de Beaurenard – Tradition Rouge 2021
The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik came out it the later part of 1991 when I was just barely a teenager. I listened to it endlessly, the reason being that it was and continues to be a superb album. It’s amazing to look at the songs that didn’t make the original cut like “Soul to Squeeze” as they just didn’t fit in with the album as a whole, even if still good music. Rick Rubin did a fine job of massaging all the random genres that the […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription.

My French Red Wine Picks at the Vancouver International Wine Festival 2026
I spent Friday afternoon at the Vancouver International Wine Festival 2026 tasting French red wines. Here are my favourite French wines from the International Festival Tasting Room. There is a fairly even distribution of red wines from different regions of France (and therefore different varietals) in my picks below. Enjoy. A guide to the wines of the Rhone region
A GUIDE TO THE WINES OF THE RHONE REGION AN OVERVIEW OF RHONE WINES This blog post on Rhône wines, the first in a series, can only be an overview – the Rhône wine region is huge and the range of Rhône wines so varied that it is impossible to cover it all in one relatively short article. This guide covers Northern Rhone wines, Southern Rhone wines and their differences, Rhone wine labelling, what Cote du Rhone wines are and the general style of the region’s wines. Since 81% of Rhône Valley wines are red, I’ll focus on red Rhone wines – with the Rhone’s white and rosé wines to be covered at a later date (whites are 6% of production with rosé 13%). The terms Rhône and Rhone are used interchangeably in this blogpost. RHONE WINE STATISTICS First some figures about Rhone wine: there are over 5000 wine-growing businesses in 28 Rhône wine appellations using one or more of 27 permitted grape varieties to produce 3 million hectolitres for c. 372 million bottles of wine* – and that’s ignoring any
