Connective tissue
Senate bean soup. Being an antipodean, I had no idea such a soup existed, though the idea of pork and beans has frequently punctuated my life. After reading the recipe and the story behind it, in the NY Times, I felt a call to action. The whisper of several powerful forces. . . Winter, pork, memory, simplicity. . . I used my mum’s old slow cooker. An old Tiger brand thermal cooker from the 1990’s. A pot within an insulated pot. . . I used the inner chamber to heat and cook all the ingredients (400g dried navy beans, 3 carrots, 2 potatoes, 2 ham hocks, a onion, five garlic, half a tablespoon of paprika, a large pinch thyme, pepper, salt, a knob of butter and 2L of water) and then left it overnight. After an 8 hour sleep the soup was still steaming and 65 degrees C. At this point mash the potatoes and a small portion of beans, stir into the soup; break up the pork meat and remove the bones and skin. The soup will gleam with goodness and connective collagen. . . Curly Flat Williams Crossing Pinot Noir 2025
The Curly Flat Williams Crossing is back! After a brief stint MIA, consulting winemaker Steve Flamsteed ensured the label was back on the front line. Dark cherries and raspberries skip from the glass with an entourage of earthiness, charred oak, pine needles, cured meats, twigs and dried leaves in hot pursuit. The bones of a very good Pinot Noir are here, and it starts with such promise, but I found the palate to be clipped and it didn't flow through as much as hoped. Given the chance to shine over a couple of days, the drive and length I was hoping for just weren't there. Have a glass with food and you may not even know. 91/100 Region: Macedon Ranges RRP: $38 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Burton McMahon Lusatia Park Pinot Noir 2024
What a great Pinot! Probably the best I've seen under this Burton McMahon label. Wonderfully savoury on opening, embrace scents of twigs, dried leaves, pine needles and pine mushrooms. Dark cherries and sour cherries pin themselves to the palate, walking in step with the well-balanced acidity. Fine spices tap away on a lengthy and devilishly moreish finish. It's an excellent Pinot ready for now or to hold. You choose. 95/100 Region: Yarra Valley RRP: $60 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Burton McMahon Syme Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024
With a clenched-fist tension, this Syme Vineyard Pinot Noir from two mates, Matt Burton and Dylan McMahon, will continue to steadily morph into a delightful wine with more bottle age. Tasted alongside the Lusatia Park Pinot Noir, this was just that bit more coiled. Black cherries, plums and a hint of chocolate, earthiness, twigs and undergrowth muse with a fine dusting of spice. It certainly evolved more the longer it was open over a few days of tasting. 93/100 Region: Yarra Valley RRP: $60 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Yeah Wines Pinot Noir 2025
Reviewing these Yeah Wines is awfully distracting. The whole time I am tasting and writing them up, I am humming along to Usher's song, Yeah! By the way, this is a great Pinot. Fermented with whole berries and whole bunches, the fruit is sourced from Pemberton in southern Western Australia. What engages me is how it steadily builds interest. You could suggest there is a new vista around every corner - winning! It opens with earthy and twiggy aromas with some wood smoke. Forest berries consume the fruit profile, but I'm hooked on the terrific savoury presence and drive. A delicate sheet of spice draws out to the persistent finish, where you find a fine hint of red apple acidity. I'm all in on the shape and flow. A solid example of Pinot, it's a beautiful drink without the bells and whistles. Yes! 91/100 Region: Pemberton RRP: $35 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

German pinot noir: from abysmal to world-class
German pinot noir has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades, shifting from widely dismissed, overripe and heavily oaked wines to elegant, precise and terroir-driven expressions. Producers now focus on earlier harvests, lower yields, cooler fermentation and less oak, resulting in lighter, more refined styles. Germany’s diverse soils add further complexity, and with […] Continue reading: German pinot noir: from abysmal to world-class The post German pinot noir: from abysmal to world-class was originally published on BKWine Magazine and written by Göran van den Brink . Cave des Vins de Sancerre – Les Chaillots 2024
I’m firmly of the opinion there are more Mormon Missionaries who have seen the inside of a stripclub than I have. I say that as in my three decades of strip club entrance ‘opportunity’, I’ve been into a total of one. Growing in up in the US and hearing Al Bundy on Married with Children talk up the “Nudie Bars”, I was, like many, raised on the premise that these bastions of female objectivization were something all true red-blooded males would surely enjoy. Yet, despite this, my sole experience left […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription.

Davis Bynum: Russian River Valley Pinot
Davis Bynum has a long Sonoma history, including pioneering single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Russian River Valley grapes in 1973. The brand was sold to the Klein family, who run Rodney Strong, in 2007, and Greg Morthole has been the winemaker there for about two decades. Sorby Adams Gudilly Rosé 2026
My first review from the 2026 vintage, this Gudilly Rosé from Sorby Adams is fun, energetic and a glass full of joy. Made from a blend of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir (66/34) sourced from the Riverland, a riot of watermelon, the white bit of the watermelon, rhubarb and red currants burst from the glass to appease the taste buds. Devilishly fragrant with dried red petals and strawberries hitting the zone, an unmissable lick of strawberries and cream is partnered by apricot kernel and red apple skin. Well priced and sure to bring a smile to your dial, there is a lot to like about this. 91/100 Region: Riverland RRP: $24 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X
