Make Distilled Strawberry Water or Strawberry Soda
Several years ago, I bought a home “water distiller” on Amazon. There are tons of different ones on Amazon. My model appears to be discontinued but here is the page of lots of similar ones. The one I bought I made sure had settings that would go past the boiling point of alcohol (78C) and […] The post Make Distilled Strawberry Water or Strawberry Soda first appeared on Alcademics .

Hiatus Beers Non Alcoholic Pale Ale
These Hiatus Non Alcohol beers are the business! One of three in the range, this Pale Ale is an excellent alternative to the fully leaded versions in the marketplace. Full-flavoured, it delivers more than its alcohol-free status suggests. Jules Ryan is at the helm. With some serious brewing knowledge and experience after stints at Stone & Wood, Balter and Little Creatures, he saw a hole in the market that he has filled admirably with his Hiatus beers. Fine malt characters from SM40 and Voyager provide a more than respectable foundation while a blend of El Dorado, Amarillo and Cascade hops brings a swathe of vibrant tropical and citrus aromas. Full-flavoured with hints of guava and tropical fruits, a balanced bitterness keeps everything in check before a clean and crisp finish invites another sip. What I find most appealing is that this Pale Ale does not rely on sweetness to build the flavour profile, rather delivering a beer that is fresh, balanced and tastes exactly how a P

Thatchers Zero, Somerset Cider, 0%
The Non-Alcoholic market continues to grow despite lagging sales in Alcoholic Beverages. Any Beer or Cider manufacturer without a product in the NA category is missing out. I came across Thatchers Zero Somerset Cider when up in Scotland recently & decided to give it a taste. Thatchers are easily available everywhere in the UK from … Continue reading Thatchers Zero, Somerset Cider, 0% →

Nonalcoholic Cocktails Need Texture
In a recent story for AlcoholProfessor I wrote about John deBary’s latest book on nonalcoholic cocktails and the tricks he uses to improve the NA spirits you can buy off the shelf, mostly with the addition of boosting botanicals and/or intense tea infusions. I’m a big fan of deBary’s work in the category. Read the […] The post Nonalcoholic Cocktails Need Texture first appeared on Alcademics .

Hiatus Beers Non Alcoholic Lager
These Hiatus non alcoholic beers are well worth exploring. This lager is a most respectable drink. Jules Ryan is at the helm at Hiatus. With some serious brewing knowledge and experience after stints at Stone & Wood, Balter and Little Creatures, he saw a hole in the market that he has filled admirably with his Hiatus beers. Brewed as normal, it then undergoes the process of removing alcohol. Malty with a delicate citrus presence and low in bitterness, this is a clean and crisp lager. It's a beer of good shape with a decent length, but given the choice, I'd run to the Pacific Ale in the range. Curiously, there are a few commercial, large-production non-alcoholic lagers on the market, and I much preferred this to them. Hiatus Beers Non Alcoholic Pacific Ale
What's the best non-alcoholic beer I have tasted? This Hiatus Pacific Ale is it. Woah! Like a mango parfait, this is a summertime sunset in a can. Made with Veloria, Vienna and Munich malt and Galaxy hops, the front label says it's a full-flavoured non-alcoholic beer and it's spot on. Drop this in a lineup of similar style beers and you'd struggle to tell the difference. Jules Ryan is at the helm. With some serious brewing knowledge and experience after stints at Stone & Wood, Balter and Little Creatures, he saw a hole in the market that he has filled admirably with his Hiatus beers. Brewed as normal, it then undergoes the process of removing the alcohol. A starburst of tropical fruit greets you with passionfruit, a dash of pineapple, guava, freeze-dried papaya and this insanely delicious creamy meringue thing that rides on their coattails. Clean, crisp and incredibly refreshing, I wish I had more than one can on hand. The low and non-alcohol beer scene is miles ahead

Received: Stiller’s Soda selection
Time for something a bit different and non-alcoholic—soda (or “pop,” depending on where you live). Stiller’s Soda is a relatively new brand of “classic sodas” co-founded by actor and comedian Ben Stiller that initially launched with three flavors: Shirley Temple, Lemon Lime, and Root Beer. The company recently added its … Continue reading

October Sober - Top 5 NA Beers from the last month
Has it already been an entire month? I know time moves faster as you get older, but man, this last 4+ weeks seemed to be gone in a flash. The transition from outdoor patio beers to indoor basement beers happened almost overnight and while I will miss my sunshine and warm summer breezes, I do enjoy hunkering down in the winter and enjoying all my lazy indoor activities while the wind howls and the snow flies. Soon we will decorate the house once again for Christmas and I'll get that weird nostalgic feeling that challenges my sobriety at the best of times. I used to love to get 4 or 5 beers deep and dive into classic TV specials and holiday movies while reminiscing about how it used to be. Being sober, I find myself more in the present, but when I do cast my mind back, it seems to be in a better light and with less regret. I don't know which way is better, I sure did love that Christmas buzz, but here we are now and I've got another 5 great Non-Alcoholic beer options for you

Sober September - The 5 Best NA Beers I tried in September 2025
I had high hopes earlier this year for a monthly series of posts about the best non-alcoholic beers I had tried in the previous month, but like a lot of things I think are a good idea, I get in my own way and somehow talk my way out of it. So we are back after an 8 month hiatus with a Top 5 must try and 2 to give a pass to when it comes to NA beers. Up first, in chronological order of when I tried them, the Top 5 for September 2025 1. Nickel Brook Brewing Wicked Tame NA Hazy IPA (Sept 1st to 21st, inclusive) I drank one of these a day for 21 days and let me say that I always looked forward to cracking on open when it was time for a little refreshment. It has a great, full-bodied feel and it hits like a full on IPA. Full video here. 2. Tool Shed Brewing Zero Red Rage Red Ale (September 2nd) This one captured my attention with it's malt forward toasty malt body and caramel notes. It felt like I was dri nking a full test Red Ale, no hint of NA

1/31/2025: Old Milwaukee Non-Alcoholic
This is it--the final day of Dry January. Well, mine's been mostly dry. I had a cheat weekend away with Michelle and had a few drinks when we visited her parents at the beginning of the month. But, that's it. So, before we launch into normal February tomorrow, I figured we'd look at my old reliable NA beer: Old Milwaukee Non-Alcoholic. Old Milwaukee's owned by Pabst. Since there's no "About Us" section on their website , I'm just linking you to this post I did last April that has a little bit of Pabst history in it. I'll also say that, according to Wikipedia , Old Milwaukee was originally brewed in the 1930s by Schlitz, which was acquired by Stroh which was acquired by Pabst. Turns out there're a few old beer brands tied to Old Milwaukee. Non-Alcoholic has a brief entry on the brand's "Beer" page . This bills it simply as a "Classic American Lager with zero alcohol." My can says this is America's non-alcoholic near beer and it contains less than 0.5% ABV. So, not exactly no alcohol, bu

1/26/25: BERO's Kingston Golden Pils
I don't think I've ever talked about it here on the blog, but I'm a huge Spider-Man guy. The character's been my favorite superhero since I was a kid. When Tom Holland took the mantle as the MCU Webhead, I was impressed with how seamlessly he could be both Spidey and Peter Parker. When he announced BERO last year, I told myself I'd be on the lookout for it for this year's Dry January. I found a variety pack of the stuff at Target the other week, picked it up, and drank all but one. That's what we're doing today: BERO's Kingston Golden Pils. Holland's BERO's founder, but Grant Wood is its brewmaster. The company's goal is to make non-alcoholic beer that is just beer. Without fancy frills. The wort they make for each batch is much lower in ABV than your standard beer's wort. They then ferment with a yeast that doesn't touch the malt sugar, meaning that those sugars aren't converted to alcohol. If you want more on the brewery or the beer, here's their "Our Story" page .
