Ballandean Estate Nebbiolo 2024
You could say that this Nebbiolo from Ballandean Estate is an Aussie take on the famed, drink-now Langhe Nebbiolo style. Alluring aromas and savoury complexity capture the essence of the variety. Dried red petals, orange peel and dark cherries lead the charge and are ably supported by cola, char and smokey meats. The palate stays true to the variety with Nebbiolo's signature drying, powdery tannins that provide structure and character without overwhelming its approachability. That floral lift and citrus peel nuance have me circling back. In all, it's a respectable, compelling and authentic take that is ready to drink now to the medium term. Bravo. 92/100 Region: Granite Belt RRP: $44 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Samantha May Nebbiolo 2025
Wines like this from Samantha May are why I love doing what I do. Is it the best Nebbiolo I've ever had? No. But do I want to keep on topping up my glass? Hell yes! Based in Mudgee, Samantha Sutherland is behind her label Samantha May Wines, sourcing fruit from a few regions around New South Wales. This Nebbiolo comes from Gundagai, a region not known for producing Grand Cru wines, and perhaps that's the perception we need to change in this Australian wine landscape. If the soil is right, the climate is good and the making is great, does it matter? Importantly, though, this wine needs a decant. I say that because when I opened it and tasted it immediately after a few swirls, a potato sack and damp type aroma arrested my attention and focus. I was looking at a number of wines at the time, so I parked it for the next day and what a metamorphosis it underwent! Silky, dancy and damn delicious. Woah! Layered with interest, think cherries and cherry pips, red plums, orange peel, black

First Drop Forza Nebbiolo 2018
With some gentle encouragement, this Adelaide Hills Nebbiolo from Firs Drop Wines slowly emerged from its chrysalis. Tame with a muted nose on opening, you need to sift about to get it going. Dried purple petals and lavender eventually mustered up the courage to get things underway. Tight through the mid-palate, it really hit its straps on the third day of tasting, which enabled a few more runs to hit the scoreboard. All the varietal things shape up with cherry cola, dried plums and dark cherries met by a slew of savoury delights. Dusty tannins are mid-palate focused and tight, pointing to a long future ahead. But to drink now, a long decant is needed to see it at its best. 91/100 Region: Adelaide Hills RRP: $60 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X

Enzo Bartoli – Piemonte Couture
“Enzo Bartoli offers a cross-section of Piemonte's most significant wine-growing areas.” Vinifera Mundi In their own words, Enzo Bartoli is an identity that encapsulates the idea of style. It is the signature that seals a collection of wines capable of telling, with minimalistic elegance, the sartorial soul of Piedmont. Women's History Month: Featuring Cristina Scarpellini of Tenuta Scerscé in Valtellina
When one thinks of the Nebbiolo grape and wines produced from Nebbiolo what region of Italy immediately comes to mind? My guess is that most consumers would immediately think of the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. What if I told you that the Lombardy region right next door also produces Nebbiolo? In continuation of honoring Women’s History Month , I interviewed with Cristina Scarpellini of Tenuta Scerscé whose winery is situated in the Valtellina wine region of northern Lombardy . Cristina works exclusively with Nebbiolo, which is locally known there as Chiavennasca . Cristina Scarpellini Cristina ’s winery, Tenuta Scerscé (pronounced “shaer-shay), is set in Lombardy’s northernmost part, Valtellina, bordering Switzerland . This landscape is a valley that was carved out by glaciers during the last Ice Age with the Adda River that runs east out to Lake Como . Back in 2018 this area was deemed a UNESCO World
