How to Cope with Depression During Addiction Recovery
Depression and addiction recovery frequently collide. For many people, depressive symptoms don't disappear when they get sober — they become more visible. The substances that once masked painful emotions are gone, and the emotional weight underneath them can feel suddenly overwhelming. Knowing why this happens, and what to do about it, is one of the most important things a person in recovery can learn. This guide is written specifically for people who are in recovery from substance use and are experiencing depression. It covers the unique reasons depression surfaces during recovery, how it increases relapse risk, and the coping strategies that work best within a recovery context. Antidepressants for Breastfeeding: Nursing Safety When Substance Use Is a Concern
Breastfeeding can support bonding and infant nutrition. It can also raise hard questions when you need mental health treatment. If you are taking an antidepressant or thinking about starting one, you may wonder if it is safe to keep nursing. This pillar page explains what we know about antidepressants for breastfeeding, what “safe” means in real-life care, and how to lower risk for your baby. It also covers an extra layer that matters in recovery: how alcohol or drug use can change safety for both you and your infant. This information is educational. It cannot replace care from your OB-GYN, prescriber, pediatrician, or a lactation clinician. Rumination Disorder, Anxiety, and Addiction: When Overthinking Fuels Substance Use
Rumination can mean very different things in medicine. For some people, it describes mental “overthinking” that loops the same worries over and over. For others, rumination disorder is a feeding and eating disorder where food comes back up from the stomach to the mouth after meals. Both forms can create intense distress, raise anxiety, and, for many, become tangled up with substance use. This guide explains how rumination, anxiety, and addiction interact, what rumination eating disorder is, and how rumination disorder treatment can support long‑term recovery. Day 10 With No Alcohol: What to Expect Physically and Emotionally (and When to Get Help)
Day 10 with no alcohol is a big milestone. You are far enough from your last drink to notice real changes, yet close enough that withdrawal and cravings may still feel intense. For some people, day 10 feels amazing. For others, it feels like “I made it this far, but I’m exhausted and still want to drink.” Both experiences are common. What you feel today depends on how much and how often you drank, your overall health, and whether your detox was medically supervised. If you stopped heavy daily drinking on your own, day 10 can still feel rough and even risky. If you completed a supervised detox and are now in rehab or outpatient care, you may be more stable but still emotionally raw. One Year Later...
I woke up this morning, knowing it's been exactly 1 year since the last time I indulged my inner drunk and had way too many pints, topped off with a big old glass of whiskey. One year since I could barely breathe after going up a flight of stairs or walking to my car and one year since my resting heart rate was somewhere around 170 beats per minute. In those 365 days, I have not let go of reality even once. No slip ups or "accidents", never having more than 2 beers in a single day and no hard liquor of any kind. Part of this is predicated by all the medications I'm on to help control blood pressure and keep my heart from running itself out of beats before my time is supposed to be up. But the other part has become a battle of internal monologues, each vying for supremacy and each with some good points to be made. On one side, we've got the good times Polk, the dr
