Scholarship gives emerging industry professionals hands-on judging experience at Sydney Royal Wine Show
Three winemakers from across Australia recently “gained valuable hands-on experience” by taking part in the Sydney Royal Wine Show as part of the Sydney Royal Wine Professional Development Scholarship program administered by the RAS Foundation. Awarded late last year, the scholarships are helping recipients further refine their skills, with scholars undertaking the Advanced Wine Assessment Course or Advanced Viticulture Course through the Australian Wine Research Institute. To learn from some of Australia’s top judges and help celebrate 200 years of the Sydney Royal Wine Show, scholars Michelle Li, who currently works at Knappstein Wines in the Clare Valley, SA; Oliver Thomas of Murray Street in Barossa Valley, SA; and Jaimee Mutton, from Agnew Wines in the Hunter Valley, NSW, travelled to Sydney to attend judging. Sydney Royal Wine Committee Chair, Angus Barnes, said the scholarships are an important investment in the people who will help shape the next chapter of Australian wine. “Th

🎧Aglianico Rosato: If You Love a Bold Red Wine, Try Its Rosé!
When you take a great red wine grape like Aglianico and you make a Rosé from it, do you know what you get? That’s right. A great Rosé! In this episode we explore Rosé made from Aglianico, the King of Southern Italian red wines, which also happens to make a great Rosé. If you think you don’t like Rosé, it probably just means that you haven’t had one made from a red wine grape that you love. And in Italy, they are starting to make some fantastic Rosé wines, also known as Rosato in Italian. So, if you see the term Rosato, don’t be confused. Unlike the typical Provence-style Rosé, which dominates the market, Aglianico Rosé wines have more structure and more complexity. We also talk about a study that found people who know a lot about wine tend to be of higher intelligence. We couldn’t agree more! Wines reviewed in this episode: 2024 San Salvatore Vetere Rosato, 2025 Feudi di San Gregorio San Greg Rosato Send us a Text Message and we'll respond in our next episode! Contact The Wine Pair Pod

🎧The Wine Makers – Disorganized Crime: The Smuggler and his Cellar
This week, we’re joined by “Rainbow Valentine” and her father, “Walter Lemur,” of the wildly popular podcast Disorganized Crime: Smuggler’s Daughter. Over the span of 10 episodes, Rainbow’s podcast tells the story of growing up in the drug-smuggling hippie counterculture of 1970s and ’80s Marin County. Walter was a particularly successful smuggler, and like many of his counterparts, he needed ways to launder all those ill-gotten gains. Some people bought vintage cars, art and antique jewelry, or made cash deals that skirted tax and banking laws. Walter did some of that, but early in his smuggling career he discovered a much more enjoyable way to invest his cash: fine wine. Shockingly, Sam grew up with Rainbow, only he knew her as Thesaly… Once he connected all the dots, we invited Thesaly and her dad to come on the show and tell some of his stories of wine “collecting.” We get into how “Walter” got into the business in the first place, some of the many dangers and complications along t
