Ever since the announcement that Jacksonville’s Intuition Ale Works was for sale, the craft beer community has been waiting to hear who the new owner would be, and the unfortunate news came Wednesday that Intuition owner Ben Davis was unable to find a buyer, so the brewery will close its doors in April 2026. Why Malt Deserves More Credit in Beer
When people talk about beer, hops usually steal the spotlight. They’re flashy, aromatic, and easy to identify. But during my recent live stream on Rod J BeerVentures , I sat down with Ian Goering, Director of Operations at Blue Ox Malthouse , to talk about the ingredient that truly forms the backbone of beer: malt . This conversation was all about peeling back the layers of beer and helping drinkers understand what’s really happening before the hops ever show up. Malt: The Foundation of Beer Malt plays a critical role in beer, influencing nearly every aspect of the final product. From sweetness and body to color and mouthfeel, malt is responsible for much of what we experience when we take that first sip. Ian explained how different malt varieties contribute flavors ranging from bread and cracker to caramel, chocolate, and roast—often without beer drinkers realizing where those flavors originate. One of the biggest takeaways from the conversation was just how much intentional decision-

FIRESTONE WALKER MARKS 30 YEARS OF SHAPING THE LANDSCAPE OF AMERICAN CRAFT BEER
FIRESTONE WALKER MARKS 30 YEARS OF SHAPING THE LANDSCAPE OF AMERICAN CRAFT BEER A milestone year anchored by timeless originals, modern evolution and singular focus on brewing the perfect beer Paso Robles, California - Thirty years after brewing its first batch of Double Barrel Ale (DBA) in a vineyard on California’s Central Coast, Firestone Walker enters its fourth decade with the same restless spirit that shaped its beginning. The 30th anniversary is not a look back. It is a reaffirmation of values, vision and an enduring belief that beer can be better. Founded in 1996 by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker, Firestone Walker helped define what American craft beer could become. From pioneering techniques to obsessive quality standards, the brewery has spent three decades crafting beers that stand the test of time while never standing still. “Thirty years in, we still believe the best beers are the ones that respect tradition bu

The Ten - 2025's Best Sober Moments
A whole year of beer boiled down to ten spots. Just ten moments that lingered in my mind and helped get me through the last 365 days make this list and while there were a lot of low points in 2025, these beers gave light and hope to an often dreary world. It's been an adjustment talking about NA beers versus regular pints, the alcohol effect being absent makes for a whole different vibe to be sure. But the options are getting better and as the market for NA offerings grows, so should the quality. I'm here for the beer, so let's get on with this year's Sober Ten. 10. One for the Road Brewing Proceed with Caution Amber (January 26th) One of the first non-alcoholic beers that really wowed me this year, One for the Road Brewing certainly tries to deliver as close to the real thing in a whole lotta styles as anyone out there. Prolific in number, they try to find an NA offering for every taste and this nutty, toasted malt beauty hit all the marks. Lacking not

2025 Year in review: Craft beer's continued mantra - adapt, adjust...survive
All logos and graphics the property of their respective owners. Image: Brian Brown/Beer in Big D. Another challenging year for the North Texas craft beer industry has come to a close. Yes, there are still headwinds. Yes, breweries are still struggling. Yes, growth is still stagnant (for the fourth year running), but a flat growth curve is better than one in a downward spiral, and North Texas is still holding firm (give or take) in terms of overall brewery numbers. And yes, a lot of these same things were said last year, and the year before that. It's just that the market environment hasn't changed much. If anything, headwinds are stronger ( according to the Brewers Association ), so many of the same messages from past years continue to apply - adapt, adjust...survive. As it applies to brewing operations, adjustments could mean changing up a product line, or even a business model. We've seen instances of both over the past few years, as owners have been putting other beverage types on t

One Year Later...
I woke up this morning, knowing it's been exactly 1 year since the last time I indulged my inner drunk and had way too many pints, topped off with a big old glass of whiskey. One year since I could barely breathe after going up a flight of stairs or walking to my car and one year since my resting heart rate was somewhere around 170 beats per minute. In those 365 days, I have not let go of reality even once. No slip ups or "accidents", never having more than 2 beers in a single day and no hard liquor of any kind. Part of this is predicated by all the medications I'm on to help control blood pressure and keep my heart from running itself out of beats before my time is supposed to be up. But the other part has become a battle of internal monologues, each vying for supremacy and each with some good points to be made. On one side, we've got the good times Polk, the dr
