Bowmore 2007 ‘Gentle Giant’ (Passion for Whisky)
Although we never get enough of the recent wave of Bowmore releases, this one arrived exactly when I just published two or three others. So I postponed it a little. Anyway this Bowmore 18 Year Old gets the title Gentle Giant , because Stefan from Passion for Whisky is tall and looks a bit like a gentle giant. He chose this cask to celebrate his anniversary. Bowmore 18 yo 2007 (50,3%, Boogieman Whisky Society 2026, bourbon hogshead, 90 btl.) Nose: fresh and maritime, with kelp and crushed shells, wet gravel, minty notes and lots of bright citrus. Lemon juice and candied lemon peels, brine, maybe light peach as well. Not very peaty, there's just a light hint of tarry rope in the distance. Mouth: more smoky now, along with peppermint, more seaweed and drying mineral notes. Mid-palate a short flash of green mango and passion fruit appears, something we're always hoping for. Then also wet wool, more saltiness and lots of cold ashes. Subtle hints of grassy herbs and light resin too. Fi

Buds & Barrels, Double-V, Klubb23, Crann, The Green Door
In case you don't recognize these names immediately: all of these are (smaller) Belgian bottlers or clubs .You may know Buds & Barrels as a whisky shop, but they also have their own range. Then there's Double-V who bottled the 25th anniversary bottling of whisky club The Green Door . Last but not least: a bottling by Klubb23 for Crann Whisky Club.

Bowmore 2007 / Armorik 2013 (Wu Dram Clan)
Another Bowmore already? Yes, why not. Wu Dram Clan is launching two new whiskies today and one is an 18 year old Bowmore . The other dram is a 12 year old Armorik from Warenghem distillery in France. There was an inofficial presentation at the Limburg Whisky Fair a few weeks ago but due to logistics issues things came a bit later. Check the Wu Dram Clan website for dealer information.

Glenkinchie 2008 / Caol Ila 2007 (DeinWhisky)
We received a package with two new releases from Sansibar . These are white label bottlings exclusively available from DeinWhisky , from Glenkinchie and Caol Ila distilleries. Both whiskies are 18 years old and come from a sherry cask but with a clearly different cask influence. Glenkinchie 18 yo 2008 (54,1%, Sansibar for DeinWhisky.de 2026, Oloroso sherry hogshead, 273 btl.) Nose: a juicy style of sherry, with sweet and sour berries at the fore. Damsons, sour cherries, hints of strawberry jam. This is lifted by some cinnamon and peppermint, leading up to subtle floral top notes. Then light cocoa and herbal honey. The fruitiness and elegance are quite excellent. Mouth: now clearly more spicy and even a little tannic. There are dried herbs and drops of strong coffee along with plain winey notes. Also toffee sweetness, red fruits again (plums and cranberry) with some mint chocolate. Finish: medium to long, with a peppery and floral note as well as some citrus and toffee.Although it

Savanna + RumX 17 Years – Grand Arôme
RumX recently released a bottling of Savanna rum . It is a Grand Arôme from the Savalle column still, with 665 g/hlpa of esters. It underwent 17 years of tropical ageing on La Réunion, in an ex-cognac and ex-armagnac cask. After all these years it comes at a fierce 68.7% ABV.They announced this already as the rum of 2026 which is quite a bold claim. Of course it's a very old Savanna and it comes from a highly appreciated batch of casks, but we'll see how it performs in the glass.

A Wet January
A solid month of drinking followed by the sketchy post mortem of the best bottles. I’ve relied on my hand written notes, which grow shorter and messier each year. Chardonnay . From fat to thin. . . Martinborough Vineyard Home Block Chardonnay 2017 . 1/3 to 1/2 butterball. Similar in old school emphasis is the Sianpius Tamar Valley 2015 . Another partial butterball, but also a passing and unexpected hint of celery. Forest Hill Block 8 Chardonnay 2016 . Cream, not butter, lovely almond meal texture. Minimal smoulder. Joan Chardonnay 2021 . Bottle pictured above. Adelaide Hills. A mix of 2 clones (one fat - I10V1 and one fit - 96). Peach and flesh, a balance of tightness and generosity. Nectar like. Yabby Lake Chardonnay 2017 . A good nose, stone fruit and almond meal. The most notable thing is the palate profile. A juxtaposition of cream and stone fruit acids. Finally - the Tyrrell’s Vat 47 2022 . Lean and spare, flint and struck match nose. A very tight but fruit
