videoThis Bordeaux Drinks WAY Above $40...but it ain't!

You buy the wine young. You cellar it. And then you hope you’re patient enough to leave it alone for a decade. This time, somebody else already did the hard part. The 2016 Château Corbin is a fully mature Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from one of Bordeaux’s greatest modern vintages, and it’s entering exactly the stage where great Bordeaux starts becoming truly compelling. And the timing here matters. The 2016 vintage was the first under the fully modernized vision of Anabelle Cruse-Bardinet, who completely renovated the château and rebuilt the winemaking facilities before this vintage came in. Combined with the structure and precision of the 2016 growing season, the result was a major leap forward f

First look at Tiny Giants Brewing debut in Northeast Portland
Tiny Giants Brewing is growing, one of our most anticipated new Oregon breweries or taprooms of 2026 has opened their first brick-and-mortar location in Portland’s Woodlawn neighborhood at 6719 NE 18th Ave. Founded by former Fracture Brewing head Brewer and Cascade Brewing alumni Steve Beaudoin, Tiny Giants first launched one-year-ago initially producing all of their beers at the no longer in use Gorges Brewing location at 2705 SE Ankeny. The time between securing their own location paid off in establishing their brand in the local market with 16oz cans and draft distributed through Day One Distro. The new permanent Tiny Giants location has a colorful open floor plan taproom shared with a 10-barrel brewing system just behind the bar. While the brewhouse is still being piped and fully installed, when up and running Beaudoin and his team that includes brewer Morgan Clark, have goals to produce about 1,000 barrels annually. Understanding acidity in wine
Every successful band has an unsung hero. These artists rarely seize the limelight, but they’re always working hard behind the scenes, and they’re instrumental to the band’s sound. Examples include Rolling Stones co-founder Ian Stewart, Pink Floyd guitarist Richard Wright and Malcolm Young of AC/DC. They never received the public acclaim given to the likes of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, but they’re the glue that held their bands together. Acidity plays a similar role in wine. The other key characteristics - alcohol, body, sweetness and tannin - get all the attention, whereas acidity rarely enjoys the credit it deserves. Its work is more subtle, but it’s just as important in shaping how a wine feels, tastes and ages. Many people overlook acidity, and others misunderstand it, confusing it with bitterness or high levels of alcohol. Truly understanding acidity in wine will make you a better taster, so we’ve explained how it works and why it matters. Why acidity matters in wine Acidity

The crawl of Rome
In an age of beery uncertainty -- when the consensus of the craft era is, if not completely dismantled, then at least creaking with important bits falling off -- it's nice that some certainties remain. I've developed a newfound appreciation of the beers and bars I discovered in the early years of this blog, and before, which are still operating despite the barbarians being inside the gates. So it was especially pleasing to arrive into Rome and find that two of its fondly-remembered institutions are still going, same as ever. Open Baladin is one of them. I first visited this outpost of the Piedmontese brewery in 2014 , and was impressed. The place has rather more of a worn-in look now (don't we all?) but the range of beers is still excellent. I started with Alla Ceca , a Czech-style lager and indeed a collaboration with the Budvar people, who do seem to be getting around a bit these days. Their international collaborations never seem to be as good as the original, however, and this was

It’s the price, stupid
The week in Provence had begun shakily. Pounding rain and fierce Mistral on the drive up had lent a dreary start. But, it was a surprise hit of fierce allergies mixed with a very unfortunate breakfast at a hotel in Vaison-la-Romaine that stuck with me for all the wrong reasons which were making for a less-than-pleasing week in what is normally my favorite part of France. As the week rolled on, I just wanted a nice, menu de midi at a pleasant, normal restaurant. No emulsions, no deconstructions, no petit […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription.
