🎧WTF is Sylvaner? Your Oktoberfest Wine?
If beer ain’t your jam for Oktoberfest, then maybe the great Bavarian German wine called Sylvaner (or is it Silvaner?!?) is the wine you should be enjoying with your pretzels and bratwurst this season. Yes, there are two spellings of Sylvaner, and yes it matters because the style of Silvaner spelled with an “i” is the German version, and it is a crisp, acidic wine that goes well with German foods, while the version with the “y,” most famously from Alsace, France, is a different, richer wine. The other thing to know is that there is a classic bottle shape for Silvaner from Franken, Germany that is just, frankly, odd. The bottle shape is called Bocksbeutel, and let’s just say the name is for a body part that is, well, delicate. But you have to listen to the episode to learn more. We had a lot of fun getting “exposed” to this different type of wine and wine bottle, and we think you will enjoy it, too. I’d like to thanks the folks at Penelope Bourbon and their PR team for sending this sample with no strings attached. Hello my friends! It is time for a bonus post. I was planning to do this yesterday. I always do bonus posts on Friday, but I just plum forgot. Tonight’s subject is actually something I didn’t plan to review. It was sent along to me by mistake as I had already turned down the sample thinking that you folks might find it a bit outside the norm for the focus of the site. But when it landed on my doorstep, I figured what the heck? I mean I’m not going to force y’all to read this, you are grown adults and can make that decision on your own. So what is it? Well, it is a premade, bottled, cocktail. You open it up and pour it over ice. And while I know that an Old Fashioned is basically the easiest cocktail to make outside of two ounces of whiskey in a glass, they put a nice spin on it by adding blackberry to the mix. For many years this wine was known as Napa Gamay, but it was a case of mistaken identity that took several experts and eventually DNA testing to reveal the truth. And the truth is that Valdiguié is delicious and tragically little known. Nearly extinct today in France where it is originally from, it is now becoming a bit of a darling in California in the natural wine and low intervention winemaking circles. In the past, Valdiguié, which is a prolific grower, was used as blending wine, and was not appreciated as a single varietal. Today, it is finding its place among adventurous winemakers who know how to tease out its wonderful qualities. Kanekou Okinawa Whisky
Kanekou Okinawa is a Japanese whisky from Shinzato distillery , founded in 1846. Most of its history is in the production of Awamori, the traditional rice drink (black koji) from the region. They are now applying their knowledge of slow fermentation and distilling in a tropical climate to the production of whisky. Not much information is available. It is said that it is a blend of three types of whisky : malt and wheat whisky (at least 3 years of age) and rice whisky (Ryukyu, aged in sherry casks for at least 8 years). Kanekou Okinawa Whisky (43%, OB +/- 2025) Nose: quite soft. There's a bready note up front, along with yellow apple. Perhaps also a hint of (slightly overdue) pineapple I'm afraid a musty type of (sherry?) cask is taking the lead, along with toffee and a light mouldy note. Also hints of candied ginger and caramelized almond. Mouth: not so good. There's a raw alcoholic / feinty note, a metallic kind of sweetness, some pears and just a hint of very, very young Scotti

Corpinnat hits a full two dozen
It wasn't even two years ago that the couple behind Cisteller were lamenting that they would be the 'unlucky' number 13 to join the Corpinnat association. I told them to think of themselves more as a "baker's dozen" and that ultimately, there would be new additions at such a speed that their order of joining wouldn't matter. Their placement hasn't hurt them at all, nor Corpinnat which has just announced that they've reached a full two dozen members with the addition of #24, Fèlix Massana Ràfols. Like many, they're one of the wineries that made the decision to leave DO Cava. It should come as little surprise that they left as they've met all the Corpinnat requirements for some time in that they farm organically and they were one of the "Elaboradors Integrals" which DO Cava has apparently already scrubbed from the list on their website.
