Returning to Casanova di Neri-A Renewed Look at One of Montalcino’s Defining Estates
The Wining Hour: Some wineries leave a lasting impression long after the final sip. Casanova di Neri is one of them, as this producer has helped define the modern identity of Brunello while preserving its deep cultural roots. I first visited the estate nearly 10 years ago, and while the wines were memorable, it was the setting itself that lingered in my mind—a landscape of rolling hills, vineyards stretching toward the horizon, and a palpable sense of purpose. Returning recently, I found much had changed and yet everything felt remarkably familiar. Since it was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, the estate remains deeply rooted in the same vision that has guided it —to express the unique character of Montalcino through exceptional Sangiovese. Located on the eastern side of Montalcino in southern Tuscany, Casanova di Neri occupies a privileged position among some of the region’s most distinctive vineyard sites. Over the decades, the Neri family has assembled a collection of vineyards tha

The Fifth Release of Laguna Madre Bourbon
Last Saturday, in the Hill Country heat, I stood at the gates of our distillery and looked out at a line of cars that stretched for what seemed like miles. They weren’t here for a concert, or a rodeo, or even for barbecue. They were here for a bottle of bourbon. Our bourbon. Laguna Madre. […]

Whiskey Review: Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey
Introduction This week on the Film & Whiskey Podcast, we're revisiting a classic: Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey . Or is it Tullamore “Dew”? The bottle label has periods (D.E.W.), but most references pronounce it simply as “Dew,” so we’re rolling with that. Tullamore D.E.W. is one of the most recognizable names in Irish whiskey. We’ve covered it before—including a few of their barrel-finished variants like the Caribbean cask—but today we’re going back to the flagship expression. This is a triple-distilled blended Irish whiskey that combines all three styles: malt whiskey, grain whiskey, and pot still whiskey. It’s bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV) and is non-age stated , though we know it’s at least three years old to meet Irish whiskey regulations. Tullamore D.E.W. has long been positioned alongside Jameson as a go-to budget pour, and we wanted to see how it holds up in 2025. Is it still a solid pick for the price? Or a

Dance with my Father
I make no apologies for repeating this post, as 1 February is a date I can never ever forget. This year sees the 25th anniversary. In some ways it seems like yesterday - how can it be 25 years? We are singing Dance with My Father for our choir summer concert and that is difficult to sing especially with a day like today. I suspect, should I ever die and they need to perform a post-mortem on me, they'll find the First of February 2001 etched in my brain like a stick of Brighton rock. It is a date I shall never ever forget. In mid December 2000, I had been told I needed an urgent hysterectomy operation. I had developed a large mass in my womb. If I lay face-down on a hard floor playing a board game or doing a jigsaw with Kay, I could feel it digging in to me. The consultant gynaecologist I went to see was fairly hopeful it was a benign fibroid but because of its large size, could not rule out it was something malignant. He nee

Jericho Bracken Vineyard Grenache 2024
I reckon this Bracken Vineyard Grenache would shine beside food. Irrespective, it's once again a very good expression of the variety from the McLaren Vale sub-region of Blewitt Springs. Made with 25% whole bunches and seeing 12 months seasoned French oak, it opens with dark cherries, strawberries and baked blueberries. Shards of dark chocolate and ripples of raspberry jam give off those classic old-school Wagon Wheel vibes. Puffs of earthiness and undergrowth are parcelled up by an array of woodsy and barbecue meat rub spices that linger. Soft, silty tannins have the last word. Great stuff. 93/100 Region: McLaren Vale RRP: $42 Source: Sample Winery Website Subscribe to Qwine here Follow: Instagram , LinkedIn and X
