Historical Episode IWP Ep63 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 7 - The Wine Men - Today is part 7 and the conclusion of my series on the California Wine Association. This episode is titled “The Wine Men” If you’ve stuck around this long, I hope you enjoyed it. Today we’ll discuss some of the winemakers, blenders and tasters of the CWA. Those responsible for what was actually in the consumers glass. The CWA was run like a real business of the time so much of what we have are those business records but I want to try and piece a little together about the other side of the business. The people, their palettes and how the wine was made. Follow the podcast at www.instagram.com/indiewinepodcast or email indiewinepodcast@gmail.com with questions, comments or feedback. Historical Episode IWP Ep62 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 6 - The Dark Days. This is part 6 of my series on the California Wine Association. Last time we saw the CWA rebuild post earthquake and fire as they constructed the largest winery in the world, Winehaven, on the shores of San Francisco Bay. Despite that, they still gorged themselves on wineries and vineyards until it was too much and they had to get rid of them. The first true downturn of the CWA. During this time they also dealt with the deaths of the men that led the Association all those years. And then prohibition hit. podcast· 58:51· Ep 61IWP Ep61 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 5 - Winehaven - Historical Episode
Historical Episode IWP Ep61 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 5 - Winehaven. This is part 5 in my series on the California Wine Association. “WineHaven” Last time we saw the CWA battle against the “Calamity” as the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire were called. Much of San Francisco was destroyed and the CWA suffered huge losses of wine, over 10 million gallons plus offices, cooperage, warehouses and cellars. The amount of wine in their country cellars throughout California, as well as some heroic action from members of the company would allow them to continue. But the rebuilding and a short 1906 crop would place added pressure on Morgan. podcast· 1h 14m· Ep 60IWP Ep60 Jeff and John Perlegos - Perlegos Family Wine Co.
We’re going to take a quick break from the California Wine Association series to talk with the Perlegos Brothers, Jeff and John about Perlegos Family wines. You’ve probably had wines made from their grapes by Maître De Chai, Fields Family, Bedrock, Haarmeyer, Sandlands and Sabelli Frish. Since 2020 they have been producing their own wines. Most from fruit they farm and others from some of the best growers in Lodi. The wines are balanced with moderate alcohols and bright acids. We talk about their upbringing and Greek heritage, their Stampede and Cherry house vineyards, why they started producing their own wines and the Assyrtiko plantings they farm. We recorded this episode at the Lodi Wine Commission offices and the Lodi Visitors Center. It’s a great place to try and to purchase wines from Perlegos and other small Lodi producers that might not have a public tasting room. Find thier wines at Perlegoswine.com and follow them at instagram.com/perlegos_wine Follow the podcast at

Historical Episode IWP Ep59 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 4 - The Calamity Edition. Today is part 4 in my series on the California Wine Association. “The Calamity Edition” Last time we saw the CWA gobble up their competitors after the end of the wine wars. They absorbed wineries, vineyards and wine houses. When they couldn’t purchase the entire company, they would get half. Allowing companies to operate with the veil of independence would keep the antitrust folks away. It was all fair game and they came out with control of over 2/3rds of the wine in the state. Today we see how they do in a battle against mother nature. Follow the podcast at www.instagram.com/indiewinepodcast or email indiewinepodcast@gmail.com with questions, comments or feedback. podcast· 1h 03m· Ep 58IWP Ep58 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 3 - Shopping Spree - Historical Episode
Historical Episode IWP Ep58 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 3 - Shopping Spree. This is part 3 of my series on the California Wine Association. Last episode we saw them battle the California Wine Makers Corporation in the so called “Wine Wars” The CWA was able to come out on top, as the winemakers Corporation was never able to truly work as 1 entity. The CWA was also able to hang on as wine prices dropped and dropped, making it tough to survive for those smaller producers. The production of California wine is firmly in the CWA’s control now. Today we see how they went from being large to being massive and became the dominating presence in California Wine. Historical Episode IWP Ep57 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 2 - The Wine Wars. This is the 2nd part of my series on the California Wine Association or CWA. Last time we focussed on why and how the CWA came to be and some of the key players behind it including Percy Morgan, Charles Carpy, Samual Lachman and Kohler and Frohling. Incorporation was finished in August of 1894, just in time for harvest of that year. The wine firms involved already had San Francisco based offices and cellars and the CWA would make use of these, utilizing the best aspects of each. Today we’ll look at the “Wine War” where a conglomerate of winegrowers would battle against the CWA for control of the California wine industry. They were called the California Wine Makers Corporation, I might refer to them also as “The Corporation” or the CWMC. This one is deep dive into the politics of the late 1800's wines business. He wasn’t the first but was among them, we’ll get to his contemporaries in time. We’re going to hear a lot of quotes in the episode today, because Keller was a very prolific writer. The quality and quantity of his wine writing is matched by only a couple other winemakers in Pre-Prohibition California. Her involvement in the wine industry was brief but she’s worth knowing about, wine connection or not. She helped in the fight to hold off prohibition. Prohibition wasn’t an overnight change, it was threatened for years and decades even. Counties and cities going dry, Saloon taxes enacted, bars shuttered, taxation laws around wines changed and when prohibition finally did happen, over 40 years or so had gone by. Historical Episode IWP Ep42 Christopher Buckley - Ravenswood, The Blind Boss of San Francisco and Lord of Livermore. Today we are looking at Christopher Buckley and his historic Ravenswood estate. Buckley was a blind Political boss in San Francisco during the latter part of the 19th century. Ravenswood was his 100 plus acre country estate in the upcoming wine producing region of the Livermore Valley. There have been books and articles written about Buckley but they all tend to gloss over the vineyard and wine producing side, giving just the basic information or sometimes mis information or conflicting stories. I’ve tried to piece it all together here from the original sources when possible to give an accurate depiction of his estate, vineyard and winemaking. Historical Episode IWP Ep40 The 2 Natoma Vineyards with Kevin Knauss - The American River, Bugbey and Gold. Today we're discussing the 2 Natoma vineyards, they were close to each other in both time and distance, enough so that they have fooled wine historians much smarter than myself. They fooled me too. I have Kevin Knauss helping me today, he was the one to set me straight, he’s spent years as a historian studying the American River and Sacramento area and has written about Bugbey and his Natoma vineyard, AP Catlin, Folsom Lake, the American River and more. Our story today starts in the time and place of the California Gold Rush and concludes with it too. Although neither vineyard is well known today, they both had their time in the sun. They were run by real men of the age, with all that entails. We’ll hear about the first raisins made in California, one of the largest vineyards in the state, huge infrastructure projects and the demise of both vineyards in the worst ways. We also ge
