videoWhy Spain ages your wine for 5 years
Most expensive red wines arrive tight, young, and demanding. Discover Rioja’s unfair advantage: they age the wine for years before you ever buy it. What questions does this video answer? What is Rioja's "unfair advantage" in the wine market? How did the Phylloxera plague in France change Spanish winemaking? What are the exact aging requirements for Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva? What does a properly aged, mature Rioja taste like? About This Video: While most of the world's expensive red wines arrive on store shelves tight, young, and demanding years of cellar patience, Rioja has an unfair advantage: they do the waiting for you. In the 19th century, when the Phylloxera plague devastated France, Bordeaux merchants and winemakers crossed the Pyrenees into Spain, bringing their oak-aging techniques with them. This accelerated a style built around oak, bottle age, and extreme patience. Today, Rioja regulates this patience by law. A Crianza must age at least two years; a Reserva t

videoWine Spectator's No. 2 Wine of 2025
This wine combines a renowned winemaker, a special vineyard and an exceptional vintage. Mark Aubert makes Chardonnays that he describes as “hedonistic” for their full body and ripe fruit flavors, while they also show terroir-driven precision and finesse. The UV-SL vineyard, planted with the late vineyard manager Ulises Valdez Sr., is just six miles from the Pacific Ocean. Regarding the 2023 vintage, Aubert says, “the weather was conducive for flavor development. Chardonnay grapes climb up this crescendo and then when you get to the crescendo, you know you’ve got the flavor you want. It’s all about flavor for us.”
videoWine Spectator's No. 3 Wine of 2025
Dry Creek Valley is the epicenter of California Zinfandel, and few vineyards express that like Lytton Springs. It was first planted in 1901, and Ridge’s first bottling was in 1972. The soil in the flatlands is gravelly loam full of rocks, boasting the oldest vines, while the hill has more clay. The 2023 bottling is more than three-quarters Zinfandel, with Petite Sirah and Carignane contributing a zesty, spicy character to the blend. Lytton Springs winemaker Shauna Rosenblum, daughter of Zin legend Kent Rosenblum, aged the wine for 16 months in American oak barrels, 19 percent of which are new.
